Fruska Gora is a mountain in Syrmia, administratively part of its western side extending into eastern Croatia. It is also referred to as the Jewel of Serbia, due to its largely pristine landscape and protection effort or the Serbian Mount Athos, the home of many historical Serbian Orthodox monasteries.

The name of the mountain originated from the old Serbian word ‘Fruzi’ which was used for naming the Frankish people. The name ‘Fruska Gora’ is ‘Frankish mountain’ in English whose meaning is based on describing a historical event, Viz.

 There are several Serbian Orthodox monasteries located on Fruska Gora such as Beocin, Besenovo, Divsa, Jazak, Krusedol, Novo Hopovo and Mala Remeta among others.

1. It is the Oldest National Park

It is good to know Fruska Gora is a mountain in Syrmia, administratively part of Serbia. The western part of it extends into eastern Croatia.

The area under the Serbian administration forms the oldest country’s national park, established in 1960.

This national park has plenty of unique landscapes, geo-morphological areas and valuable geological, rare plants and animal species. 2. Several Monasteries are Located in Fruska Gora

On this mountain, you get to have a unique cultural experience like of the Orthodox monasteries.  16 monasteries are located in this mountain, and for this reason, Fruska Gora is called Serbian Athos.

Most of the monasteries were constructed in the late middle ages, according to historical data. Some of these monasteries include Beocin, Divsa, Jazak, Krusedol, Grgeteg, Besenovo, Mala Remeta, Novo Hopovo, Privina Glava, Petkovica, Rakovac, Staro Hopovo, Velika Remeta and Vrdnik-Ravanica among others.

3. It is the Only Mountain in Vojvodina

Fruska Gora is the only mountain in Vojvodina and one of Serbia’s most developed tourist sites. Fruska Gora is a low island mountain which is located in the north of Serbia, in Srem.

4. Frushkogorski Marathon is one of the oldest in Europe

This Fruska Gora marathon is one of the oldest marathons in Europe. It has been held for more than 40 years continuously. This marathon is held each September in the Fruska Gora mountain every year.

It contains as many as 19 tracks, five competitive and 14 recreational, which take runners through the most beautiful landscapes and near the most famous localities of this very visited mountain.

5. Fruska is a Haven for Wine Lovers

Gora is one of the places known to have the best wine. According to history, the Roman Emperor known as Caesar Marcus Aurelius Probus Augustus was born and died in present-day Sremska Mitrovica brought the first vine plant from South Italy and planted it on Fruska Gora slopes.

The mountain is now covered in vineyards and has been a very famous wine region. It has boasted and helped in the growth of several traditional wine cellars and wine shops. If you want to try the best and tastiest wine, then I recommend you visit this mountain and have a nice wine-tasting tour.

6. It is a Place for Relaxation and Recreation

Fruska Gora is one of the best places to undertake recreational activities and picnicking. There are several picnic sites on this mountain, some of the famous ones include Strazilovo, Tv Tower, Zmajevac, Brankovac, Osovlje, Lezimir, Popovica, Glavica, Iriski Venac, and Letenka among others.

You can reach this picnic site by either walking or driving between them through the roads or the forest. This mountain also has more than 400 km of a marked hiking trail. For hiking lovers, this is the best place to visit, and you pursue a hiking endeavour.

7. It is Habitat to Several Animals

This park is home to several animal species. It is the habitat of 13 amphibian species and 11 reptilians, and 14 are protected such as fire salamander and European adder.

The park is also home to 211 bird species. The Eastern imperial eagle is the symbol of Fruska Gora. There are 60 mammalian species, and 17 of them are protected such as edible dormouse, European polecat, Mediterranean water shrew, and European pine marten.

There are 30 species of bats which live in Serbia, 15 species inhabit the Fruska Gora mountain and all are under strict protection. Many other animal species inhabit this park the list is endless.

8. Home to Different Plant Life

Almost 90% of the park area is forested. The predominant tree species include Linden, oak, and beech. The Linden forests concentration is the highest in Europe.

Initially, oak forests were the dominant forests, which are considered to be autochthonous vegetation on Fruska Gora, however, with time Linden has become the dominant tree species.

It is estimated about 1,500 plant species inhabit the park, of which 200 species are protected. There are as well 400 species of fungi and 30 species of orchids in the park.

9. There are Excellent Local Cuisine Restaurants

When you visit Fruska Gora don’t be worried about where to eat or have some drinks since you are sorted. In the Fruska Gora, there are excellent local cuisine restaurants.

When you visit this amazing mountain make sure you try some excellent Srem specialities in some of the popular places in the area such as Ethno restaurant Sumski raj, Arena, Frushkogorska terrace, Fruskogorski Jelen, Fruskogorska Lugarnica, Vrdnicka kula and Konak Stari orah among others.

10. Easily Accessible

Fruska Gora is easily accessible since means of transport are readily available. Despite Fruska Gora does not have its city transport, it is well connected to Novi Sad by buses.

Public transport of the suburban lines in Novi Sad cover the most important points of Fruska. There are four lines you can use to Gora, they include 72 Paragovo, 74 Popovica, 76 Stari Ledinci, and 78 Beocin Selo.
