Skadarlija is a vintage street, an urban neighbourhood and a former municipality of Belgrade, Serbia. It is located in the Old Town known as Stari Grad.

The unique thing about Skadarlija is that much of the Old architecture has remained in place and Skadarlija preserves this traditional urban architecture, including its archaic urban organization, and is known as the main bohemian quarter of Belgrade.

This street is always under protection, from the year 1967 it has been under the protection of the law as the Spatial Cultural-Historical Unit (monuments in the Republic of Serbia that have the third level of State protection).

Skadarlija is the second most visited attraction site in Belgrade after Kalemegdan hence contributing to one-third of the city’s foreign currency income.

6. Have a Chance to See one of the Oldest and most Famous House

The House of Duro Jaksic is the most famous and one of the oldest houses on Skadarska Street. It is the house of the poet, painter and bohemian Duro Jaksic.

The poet, Duro Jaksis spent the last years of his life in the house before he died in 1878. After the death of Duro, actor Cica Ilija Stanojevic lived in the house and later on actor and director Dimitrija Ginic.

This house was constructed in the middle of the eighties of the last century and it contains a lot of history. It is one of the attraction sites for tourists on Skadarlija street. There are almost no days without a program on the premises of the house. It is a must-visit location in Serbia

7. It All Started with the Gypsies

Skadarlija in back dates to the 1830s, it started where gypsies settled in the tranches that were outside the city centre. At this time there was a smoking ban in the city centre because of the fire risk.

The locals would head outside the city centre always when they wanted to smoke and drink and this led to Skadarlija street to start growing as a bar street. The artists from the nearby opera noticed the place and slowly by slowly it turned into the bohemian street of Belgrade.
