Tara Mountain is located in western Serbia. It rises from 1,000 to 1,590 meters above sea level and is a portion of the Dinaric Alps. The cliffs, deep ravines, numerous karst caves, and dense woods cover the mountain’s slopes. There are also various high-elevation passageways and meadows.

The mountain is a well-known tourist destination. The greatest portion of the mountain is Tara National Park.

1. The National Park has Mountain Peaks with Deep Picturesque Valleys in Between

The Koji Rid peak at the top of Zvijezda mountain, with a height of 1,591 m, is the highest point in the park. Additionally, the park has gorged on several rivers, including the Raa, Brusnica, and Derventa, and also the Veliki Skakavac waterfall on the Beli Rav. Karst features can be found throughout the park, including Kiak, Smiljevac, Biljeke Stene, Kozje Stene, Vitimirovac, and Kozji Rid.

2. Tara National Park Comprises Forests which are Three-Quarters of the Park.

83.5% of the park comprises forest or roughly three-quarters of the total area. The park’s forested area has earned it the name  “lung of Serbia.”

The government has carefully enforced regulations on the chopping of wood in the park. Since 1960, a wood measurement procedure has been performed every ten years. The mass increased from 463.7m3/ha to 476.4m3/ha between 1990 and 2000. Additionally, there are 9 reserves within the park, totaling 29.5 km2, or 16% of the entire park. The temperate rainforest has grown there over generations even though it is banned to cut down trees in the reserve.

The beech, spruce and fit trees make up the park’s forest. In the Zaovine city of Durici, where a small portion of the park is covered by Serbian spruce, josif panic made his discovery in 1875.

The national park, which can only be found in two places on Tara—the gorge of the Milesevka river and the Zvezda massif—has been given national protection owing to its aberrant and scientific importance.
In the national park, beech trees are the oldest, with some estimated to be over 500 years old. Other beech forests include those in the national parks of Fruska Gora and Kooaonik, as well as those in Zvezda and Raca Gorge on Tara. All these have been proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ancient Beech Forests.

3. There are 1200 Plants Species in the Park

The park contains 1200 plants, 600 different varieties of fungus, and 84 endemic Balkan plants. The park has two types of edelweiss. Pancic discovered Derventa knapweed on the canyon’s rocks, but Alpine edelweiss only grows on one ridge on Mokra Gora and is extremely endangered. Another indigenous plant is the common lady’s mantle. There is also other flora, such as wild raspberries, woodland strawberries, and various fungi.

The mountain is home to several medicinal plants, including trees, shrubs, and herbs that are utilized in both conventional and modern medicine. Gentiana, larger celandine, European holly, common mallow, coltsfoot, chamomile, lemon balm, oregano, cowslip, comfrey, dandelion, largeleaf linden, black elder, dog rose, black elder, largeleaf linden black pine, Serbian spruce, common yarrow, couch grass, sticklewort, and green-winged orchid

5. Tara Park Consists of 140 Insects Species and 135 Bird Species

The park is home to 140 distinct insect species, including the rare Pancics grasshopper, the Balkan isophya cricket that Carl Brunner von Wattenwyl discovered for the first time in 1882, and the longhorn beetle that is specific to this region of Serbia.

The park has over  135 different bird species. The slope becomes the temporary or permanent home of the golden eagle, griffin vulture, peregrine falcon, Eurasian eagle owl, spotted nutcracker, Eurasian bullfinch, crossbill, black woodpecker, rock partridge, and black grouse.
53 different mammal species, including the critically endangered brown bear and otter, can be found in the area.
European pine martens, lynxes, wolves, jackals, wild boars, and chamois are also present.

6. The Mountainous Illyrian Tribe Inhabited it During the Bronze Age.

Sanskrit for “star” is Tara. The tribe’s name is where the mountain gets its name. Slavic pottery from the 6th and 7th centuries was discovered close to Kaluerske Bare.
The town of Peru lies next to the ancient Mramorje necropolis. One of Serbia’s most significant steps complexes is this one. Being a Cultural Monument of Exceptional Importance, the state has safeguarded it.
The necropolis dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. It has 88 visible gravestones, all of which are plain and devoid of ornamentation except one that is embellished with a circle motif.
One white limestone block, weighing at least three tons, is used to make one stone. The locality’s name comes from the fact that they are known as marble blocks.

7. There is a Total of 10 Arranged Scenic Viewpoints

Of them, Banjska receives the most visitors. Kiac, Vranovina, Veliki Teferi, Mali Teferi, and Vranica are a few more.
The organized hiking routes and bicycle lanes total 290 kilometers. On the rivers, there are places to go kayaking, rafting, board rowing, and abandoning.
Additionally, a variety of products are produced locally, including honey, notably Pine honey, dairy products, juniper, plum spirits, and woolen handicrafts.
The principal tourist destinations are Mitrovac in the south and Kaluerske Bare in the north, which is near Bajina Bata. Kaspersky Bare is home to the hotels Beli Bor and Omorika as well as several lesser ones.

8. The Locality Showed Evidence of the Oldest Lead Pollution in Europe

It was made around 3600 BC. These discoveries pushed back the development of lead metallurgy by six centuries and outperformed the previous oldest discoveries, which were made in southern Spain in 3000 BC.
The research team from Northumbria University published their findings in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America in May 2018.

9. Tara National Park was used by Railways as the Crossroad

For a while, Tara served as a significant railroad junction. In the Railway Park “Bela Voda,” which is next to the spring of the same name, there are exhibits from that period.
They include the 1928 German locomotive or the “Maginot railway wagon” used to deliver shells during World War I.
In the structure built in 1916 by the Austro-Hungarians when they built the narrow gauge railway in occupied Serbia, there is also a railway museum in Mokra Gora. The heritage railway, commonly referred to as the “argan Eight,” is a popular tourist destination.

10. There are Numerous Objects Constructed on the Mountains.

Since 2010, additional structures in the park and along the lake have been built on the mountain. By 2020, there were thousands of them, the vast majority of which were constructed illegally.
They lacked the necessary permits if any. Houses, villas, and homes on floating barges are among the items. Some of these structures occupy hundreds of square meters.
Because there is no sewage system, waste is dumped directly into rivers, lakes, and the Drina, leaving regions surrounding the barges that are littered with floating trash. There were only four items left in 2018.
An additional 150 were installed or constructed over the next two years. “Everyone is having a jurisdiction and no one is having a jurisdiction,” was how the scenario was portrayed. Only the national park’s administration publicly and formally objected,
