The education system in Brazil is divided between 5 distinct levels or stages: pre-primary or preschool education, primary education, lower secondary education, upper secondary education and tertiary or higher education.

Of these five levels, only primary education and lower secondary education are compulsory and also free including in public universities.

Although schooling is free at many levels,  roughly three-fifths of Brazilians have only four years of schooling or less.

The national core curriculum includes the following mandatory subjects: Portuguese, English, elective foreign language, arts, physical education, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, philosophy and social studies.

The Brazillian education environment has different types of schools, including public, private and international options.

Public schools are free, but most ex-pats prefer to enrol their children in private or international schools for better quality education.

1. Instituto Adventista Brasil Central(Central Brazil Adventist Academy)

The Instituto Adventista Brasil Central is an elementary and high school educational institution with a boarding school system.

It belongs to the Seventh-day Adventist Church and is part of the Adventist worldwide education network.

2. The Children’s Village at the Canuan茫 School

The school has run as a boarding school for elementary and high school for over 44 years.  It has an admission of 780 children from ages 7to 17 and is run and funded by the Bradesco Foundation.

Since 1973, a farm called Canuan茫, in the city of Formoso do Araguaia, 320 kilometres from the capital of the State of Tocantins, inside 2,500 hectares, has hosted the school.

The Children鈥檚 Village is part of the Canuan茫 School and is the winner of the RIBA Award for International Excellence 2018.

The award was for the Best Building of Educational Architecture of the World. The architect, Aleph Zero, worked with Brazilian designer and television host, Marcelo Rosenbaum and with the students and teachers to complete the design.

3. EDUKICK Brazil Cruzeiro Football Academy

4. Adventist Education ( Col茅gio Internacional de Curitiba)

120 years ago, Col茅gio Internacional de Curitiba opened its doors, not just as a new school, but as the first unit of what is now known as the Adventist Educational Network in Brazil.

5. Escola Sesc de Ensino M茅dio –  Sesc High School

Created in 2008 by the Social Service of Commerce (Sesc), a private institution maintained by people in commerce and tourism services. 

In a short time, the pioneering School project became a and nationally recognized in the provision of High School

The unit, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, is currently undergoing changes in its operating model, with a view to expanding its social impact amongst its target group which is – young people dependent on workers in the trade of goods, services and tourism, with a family income of less than the minimum wages. 

This restructuring, which began in 2019, provides for the gradual discontinuation of the residential regime that will allow for increased service at the Jacarepagu谩 campus. 

The perspective is to significantly increase the number of students, rising to 1020 enrolled by the year 2025.

Thus, as of 2025, the Sesc High School will convert into a day school exclusively.

However, until 2024, the unit maintains the boarding programme to serve students from other states who are already in the system

Instruction is in English, as well as courses in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) for non-native speakers.

9. Escola Internacional do Amazonas (Amazon English Academy)

Escola Internacional do Amazonas is an international school located in the Brazilian city of Manaus, which operates in the English language for students from two years six months up to 18 years

It was founded by Dr. Pamela Jane Dickens Alves, a British national.
