Aliya Mustafina was born on 30th September 1994 in Yegoryevsk, Russia. She is one of the most renowned and successful artistic gymnasts of all time.

Her father, Farhat Mustafin a Volga Tatar, was a bronze-medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1976 summer Olympics. Her mother, Yelena Kuznetsova is a physics teacher.

She has a total of 45 combined Olympic, World, and European Championship medals. She was the 9th gymnast to win medals in every event at the World Championship and has tied with Svetlana Khorkina for the most won by a Russian gymnast.

Mustafina became the most decorated athlete in any sport except swimming in 2012 after winning four medals at the 2012 summer Olympics and first female gymnast to win an all-around medal in two consecutive Olympics.

In 2021, she was announced as the head coach of the Russian Junior Nationa team. Here are 10 remarkable facts about Aliya Mustafina.

1. She is the 21st century most decorated Olympics women artistic gymnast

Mustafina is one of the most renowned and successful artistic gymnasts of all time. She competed at the Russian National Championship in Proenza.

She won all-around with a score of 59.533, on uneven bars with a score of 16.220, and 5th on balance beam with a score of 13.680.

In May 2012, at the European Championships in Brussels, she contributed scores of 15.166 on vault,15.833 on uneven bars, and 13.933 on the floor to the Russian team’s 2nd place finish.

She places 2nd in the all-around at the Russian Cup in Penza with a score of 59.167,1st on uneven bars scoring 16.150,2nd on beam balance scoring 15.000 and 1st on floor scoring 14.750.

At the end of July, she competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London where she finished in 3rd place with 59.566 and was awarded the bronze medal, she won the uneven bars final with 16.133 and was awarded a gold medal.

In the floor final, she finished 3rd place with 14.900 earning the bronze medal making her the most decorated gymnast of the competition and the most decorated athlete in any sport except swimming. 

2. She became the first female gymnast since Simona Amanar(2000)to win the all-around medal

Mustafina competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London where she finished in 3rd place with a score of 59.566 and was awarded the bronze medal.

She won the uneven bars final with a score of 16.133 and was awarded a gold medal, in the floor final she finished 3rd place with a score of 14.900 earning the bronze medal.

3. She is the only female gymnast in the 21st century to defend her Olympic title

At the end of the 2013 Russian National Championships, she successfully defended her all-around title with a total score of 59.850, earning a 15.450 on beam,15.500 on bars,13.600 0n floor, and 15.300 0n vault.

She qualified for the balance beam and uneven bars finals in 1st place and for the floor exercise final in 3rd place.

She received a silver medal with the Moscow central team and later won the all-around and team titles at the Stella Zakharova Cup. 

4. Mustafina won her first ever Gold medal in the team competition

She competed at the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam and made history for the all-around final and all four event finals, the first gymnast to do since 1996.

She contributed an all-around score of 60.932 towards the Russian team’s 1st place finish with15.066 2nd place on vault,2nd on uneven bars with 15.600,7th on balance beam with 13.766, and 2nd on floor scoring 14.766.

She left Rotterdam with five medals including A gold medal in an individual win on uneven bars.

5. She is the 9th-most decorated Russian gymnast at the World Championship

Mustafina qualified for the World Championships being the 2nd to the all-around final,4th on bars,7th on beam, and 5th on the floor where Russian qualified for the team final in 3rd place with a total score of 57.915.

She finished 6th on uneven bars and won bronze medals on the balance beam and floor exercise respectively where she defeated Asuka Teramoto of Japan and Mykayla Skinner of the United States.

This made her the 9th-most decorated female artist gymnast in the world championship with a total of 11 medals.

6. She contributed a lot to the Russian team’s winnings

In 2010 at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam, she contributed an all-around score of 60.932 towards the Russian team’s 1st place finish where the team was announced for the 2011 World Championships.

In May at the 2012 European Championships in Brussels, she contributed to the Russian team’s 2nd place finish and at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

She helped Russia to qualify for the team final in 2nd place with an all-around score of 60.266.

In December, at the DTB Stuttgart World Cup, she helped the Russian team finish in 1st place.

She also competed in the 2013 summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia, contributing a total score of 59.932 toward Russia’s team’s 1st place finish.

7. Mustafina is one of the few gymnasts to have won  a medal in each of the 6 events at the Worlds

In the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, in the all-around final she was awarded the bronze medal, she went on to win a gold medal in Olympic gymnastics. 

In the floor final, she earned a bronze medal in a tie-breaker over Italy’s Vanessa Ferrari.

At the 2013  Russian National Championships, she received a silver medal with the Moscow Central team and later won the all-around.

She also won team titles at the Stella Zakharova Cup receiving a gold medal on uneven bars and silver on the balance beam.

8. She has been through a knee surgery

In 2011 at the European Championships in Berlin, Mustafina qualified for the all-around 1st place but tore her left anterior cruciate ligament while competing in a twisting vault in the final.

Five days later she had surgery in Straubing, Germany where she resumed workouts slowly with her coaches.

9. She is the first and only Russian to win an uneven bars Gold at worlds this century so far

In London 2012 Summer Olympics, Mustafina took home the gold medal for her uneven bars ahead of American bronze medallist Sophie Scheder of Germany. She became the 21st century only Russian gymnast to have done so.

10. Mustafina delivered her first child in 2017 while still in competition

Mustafina who is said to have dated Russian bobsledder Alexey Zaitsevwhom they met at a hospital where both were recovering from sports injuries, got married in November 2016.

They had their first daughter, Alisa in June 2017 where she returned to training afterward with the hope of returning to competition for the 2018 European Championship and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Aliya Mustafina whos now 27 years, retired in 2021 following a series of injuries including surgeries on both knees and her left ankle.

Today she replaces her former coach Evgeny Grebyonkin as the heading coach of the junior national team.
