The museum’s founding director was the famous Russian artist and sculptor, Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts. With the generous support of the Moscow city government and the Moscow city department of culture, Zurab unveiled the Museum.

His private collection of more than 2000 works by important 20th-century masters was the core of the museum’s permanent display. Later on, the museum’s keepings were enriched considerably. The collection was structured in a way that made it possible to trace all the stages in the evolution of Russian and foreign modern art.

3. It is Russia’s first state-sponsored museum

The Museum is Russia’s first state-sponsored museum focusing on Russian and foreign art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Founded in 1999 with support from the Moscow City Government and the Moscow city department of culture, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art has been among the leading cultural venues of the Russian capital for over 15 years.

The museum has five locations spread along the Boulevard ring in Downtown Moscow. The Main Building is situated in Petrovka street, near Petrovsky Boulevard in Central Moscow.

This is the 18th – century mansion house of merchant Gubin, designed by the renowned neoclassical architect Matvey Kazakov.

Apart from that, the museum has three splendid exhibition venues, a vast five-storey building in Ermolaevsky lane, a spacious gallery on Tverskoy Boulevard, and the beautiful building of the state museum of modern Art of the Russian Academy of Arts and Zurab Tsereteli Studio Museum.

Today the museum is renowned not only for its collections and exhibits but also known as a centre of artistic education. The school of modern Art (by the name of “Free Studios”) works alongside the Museum, featuring a two-year program.
