The museum is outdoor and was  opened on July 6, 1973, and is one of the largest open-air museums in Russia. It covers 37 hectares. The museum has a collection of more than 40 architectural monuments and collection of exhibits exceeding 11,000.

The museum is divided into several complexes; Zabaikalsky complex, Cis-Baikal complex, Evenkijskij complex, Archaeological complex, Buryat complex, Buddhist complex and an old complex.

It displays unique, authentic traditional Russian culture. The museum hosts various ethnic events of the conventional way of life and classic clothes.

Some of the museum collections were rescued and brought to the museum grounds giving the museum level of originality missing in museums of this kind.
