Alexei Yagudin was born on 18th March 1980 in Leningrad, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. He is a Russian former competitive figure skater.

The 2002 Olympic champion, a four-time world champion from 1998 to 2002, and a three-time Europen champion from 1998 to 2002.

The 1996 World Junior champion, a two-time Grand Prix Final champion in 1998 and 2002, and a two-time World Professional champion in 1998 and 2002.

He is the only skater to have achieved a Golden Slam, a victory in all major championships(Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships, Grand Prix assignments, and Grand Prix Final) in the same season from 2001 to 2002.

He was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland IV degree of the Russian Federation in 2003 and participated in the world figure skating Hall of Fame in 2017.

He has worked as a show host, an actor, and a figure skating commentator for Russian television networks after his retirement. Here are 10 amazing facts about Alexei Yagudin.

1. He was introduced to skating at a tender age

Yagudin was introduced to skating at the age of 4 by his mother, Zoya who did it for the sake of improving his health.

At the age of 10, he learned all his double jumps, the five triple jumps before age 12, and the triple Axel jump before age 13.

His first coach was Alexander Mayorov, and in 1992, he was introduced to the famous Russian coach Alexei Mishin, when Mayorov moved to Sweden.

He trained in Mishin’s group from 1992 to 1998 where in 1994 he began competing at the international level and won the 1996 World Junior Championship.

2. He competed in the World Championship for the first time in 1997

In 1997, Yagudin competed in the World Championships and won a bronze medal. In 1998, he led a Russian sweep of medals at the European Championships with Evgeni Plushenko in second and Alexander Abt in third.

He also competed at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics later that year despite a severe case of pneumonia where he finished in 5th place.

3. He is the first Russian single skater from the post-soviet era to win the world title

Yagudin won the 1998 World Championships a month later after competing at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics where he became the first Russian single skater from the post-soviet era to have won the world title.

He was the second youngest male world champion at the age of 18 years and 15 days, 6 days older than Donald Mcpherson in 1963, the first youngest male world champion.

4. Yagudin suffered failure due to knee injuries in his 1999 to 2001 season

At the beginning of the 1999 to 2000 season, Yagudin struggled with a knee injury which led to his withdrawal from the 1999-2000 Grand Prix  Final, and then lost to Plushenko at the Russian Championships and at the 2000 European Championships.

He won his third world title at the 2000 World Championships. His 2000-2001 season was also impaired by injuries and inconsistency, losing to Plushenko at the 2000 -2001 Grand Prix Fina.

5. Yagudin regained his European title in the 2001-2002 Grand Prix Final

After he suffered a failure in his 1999 -2001 season due to injuries, he started the 2001-2002 Olympic season with a bronze medal at the 2001 Goodwill Games in September.

He changed his training regimen and enjoyed the best season of his career after he defeated Plushenko at the 2001-2002 Grand Prix Final and regained his European title.

Also at the 2002 Winter Olympics in salt lake city, he won the men’s event and became one of the youngest male figure skating champions.

6. He is the first single skater to receive six perfect marks an unequaled record

Yagudin won his fourth world title after receiving six perfect 6.0s for a short program and another two for his free skating at the competition, becoming the first single skater to have done that in history.

His record cannot be equaled or broken because the International Skating Union introduced the ISU judging system after the 2002-2003 season.

7. He won the 2002 Skate America despite being diagnosed with a congenital hip disorder

After the 2001-2002 Olympic season, Yagudin was diagnosed with a congenital hip disorder. He was advised by doctors not to participate in skating for several months.

  He chose not to follow the advice and competed at 2002 Skate America, where he won the short program but withdrew before the next segment due to his injury.

He later announced his retirement from competitive skating, with his final performance as an eligible skater at Skate Canada.

This was during a farewell gala with a performance of a new program Memorial, and his short program from the previous season, Racing.

8. He won several World Championships over the years 

Yagudin began competing at the international level in 1994 and won the 1996 World Junior Championships.

In 1997, he won a medal bronze after competing in the World Championships and also won the 1998 World Championships.

In the 1998-1999 season, he won eleven out of thirteen competitions which he participated in the World Professional Championships and won the Grand Prix Final.

He won the 2002 European Championships thus defending his world title at the 2002 Championships. He won a bronze medal at the 2001 Goodwill Games and was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland IV degree of the Russian federation in 2002.

9. He has worked as a show host, actor, and a skating commentator for Russian television

Yagudin took part in the TV show Stars on Ice in 2006 which was later renamed Ice Age.

He finished the Ice Age tour and then made his appearance in the title role of Vladimir Putin in the starred play The Presidents Vacation written by Tatiana Chernova and Igor Kostitsyn.

In 2009, he got one of the main roles in a Russian TV series about figure skating Hot Ice, and a popular TV show Good Evening Moscow as a host.

In 2013, he acted in the Moscow Comedy Theatre in the play Don’t Trust Your Eyes and in 2018, he acted in two comedic plays.

He hosts his own TV show called Ice is Melting since 2019 where he interviews athletes.

10. Yagudin is happily married

In 2016, he married Olympic pair Skating Champion Tatiana Totmianina with whom he had their first child a daughter named Elizaveta (Liza)in 2009 and their second daughter Michelle in 2015.

The Yagudin family lives in Moscow and France where his daughters attend a french school.

Alexei Yagudin a famous Figure Skater, who is now 42years, lives in Moscow with his family where he coaches a Figure Skating Center Alexei Yagudin in Minsk, which he opened in 2019.
