Where to Eat at 4am in Rome

A while ago someone asked me where they could find decent food in Rome at four in the morning. I laughed. What a bizarre question since everyone knows Rome is a full fledged ghost town after 2am, unless you know where to find one of the secret bars.

A mere week later I found myself on the Trastevere streets, at 4am, in desperate need of something to eat. To my amazement this city isn’t as ghostly as I thought; here were my most impressive findings:

Ristorante La Base in Rome

This is where I eventually landed up eating on that fateful evening; and let me tell you, what an absolute hidden gem of the Italian capital.

I was lead here by a wonderful Israeli traveler who I befriended earlier in the evening. She had been lead here herself just a few nights (or mornings) earlier by some locals.

It’s one of the quirkiest yet most vibrant little restaurants in the whole city. The aesthetic is sort of a mismatched haven of collectable memorabilia throughout the ages. Sort of like a Roman rendition of a Hard Rock Cafe.

You can eat here all the way through until 4:30am, seven days a week. Even if you walk in at 4:15am they will happily serve you the full menu. What are we eating? Pizzas, pastas, burgers, salads, steaks, seafood… the works. I would deem it Italian/American fusion.

If you decide not to venture here in the early hours of the morning, but for regular dinner dining instead, you will need a reservation.

Fast Food Eat Street Food in Rome

This was the alternative option for my morning meal since it was in the Trastevere and we wouldn’t have had to mission too far.

It’s a very casual, hole-in-the-wall street food kiosk where you’ll get some hearty, oily junk food through until four in the morning.

They are known for their burgers, but also do crepes, sandwiches, pastas and tarts. Their vegan burgers are what really got their name onto the streets, one of the only places to eat this so late at night.

I definitely recommend the vegan/vegetarian patties if you’re dining at 4am; far easier to digest and you’ll have less trouble sleeping when you eventually decide to — just saying!

Vip Very Italian Pizza in Rome

You’re in Italy, it’s 4am… you’re defiantly wondering where the pizza at?

If you cross the Tiber from the Trastevere onto the right bank you’ll find a little Roman pizza place serving the good stuff until five in the morning, daily.

The pizzas are ready-made and served from behind the counter. You can mix and match different flavors instead of having to eat a full pie by yourself so late at night.

There seems to be a negative stigma around ready-made, late night pizza joints in Rome. As if the quality or authenticity would be lacking in some way. Let it be known that Vip Very Italian is phenomenal pizza whether you get the first slice out the oven at 8:30am when they open, or the last slice when they close at five!

Fast Food Indiano in Rome

Not everyone eating at four in the morning is coming down from a partying bender through the streets of Rome. Some are arriving in the city via Termini Train Station after long international flights to Italy, and some are heading to fly out this time too.

Fast Food Indiano is right by the station and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They see most of their business in these early hours; it’s a melting pot of fresh-off-the-boat travelers and the occasional wasted local teens.

The menu is canteen style and very to the point. It’s Indian food, or it’s Italian food — take your pick.

They’ll have curries ready made that are plated from behind the counter; same goes for chicken wings with rice and other sides. Pizzas are made to order and can take a few minutes to prepare.

Erba Di Roma in Rome

This is a coffee shop and CBD oil dispensary, with an on site baker they caters delicious treats all containing the special ingredient.
