The Top 6 Salad Bars in Rome

The concept of salad bars definitely do better in cities in the far west, like New York and California. Europeans are just not on board with the “build your own” salad thing, having been spoiled for choice with ready made salads on menus for most of their lives.

In Rome, finding a salad bar is a very rare occurrence. Sometimes I get creative and just manipulate a poke bowl into something greens-based, for lack of a better option. Here are six salad spots to note around the city if you’re a fan of this kind of dining.

1. Fratelli de Luca in Rome

Fratelli de Luca is Rome’s only actual salad bar. It’s situated close to the Vatican and brings in dozens of tourists per day; it surprises me that other restaurant moguls haven’t adopted the concept yet.

All of the ingredients are laid out behind the counter for you to choose from one at a time. You’ll start from the base up, including greens, protein, toppings, sauces and seasoning along the way.

If you prefer to eat your salad with bread, there are bagel and sandwich options with a similar build-your-own concept.

What’s great about Fratelli de Luca is everything is cheap, even in spite of their very expensive location. There is free WiFi and ample seating space for freelancers to take advantage of.

2. Escosazio in Rome

Escosazio specializes in bowls, be it a muesli bowl for breakfast, an acai bowl for lunch or a salad bowl for dinner.

This isn’t a counter based operation where you select your ingredients individually, but the menu is very flexible and one can virtually create the salad of their preference just by making amendments and add-ons, which the staff are happy to do.

Being one of few places to get salads on the right bank, expect Escosazio to be quite busy during breakfast, lunch and early-dinner rushes.

Those wishing to avoid the wait can grab a quick sandwich to go; they are only €5!

3. La Famiglia Roma in Rome

La Famiglia Roma is your standard, traditional Italian trattoria. It’s quite simply a space of good food, family energy and wholesome service.

The menu features every Italian dish you need to try at some point during your trip; pizzas and pastas deluxe, with the delicacies in-between. I’ve brought you to this trattoria for salad because they have also installed one of the best in-house salad buffets in all of Rome.

It’s in the center of the restaurant and it is self service. You can build your salad from the base up with just about any and every topping you can imagine. For vegans and vegetarians this is a dining dream.

Next to the salad bar there is also an additional buffet section with ready-made salads made by the chef. These include some pasta options and a few plates of plain grilled vegetables which can be a nice addition to your bowl.

You’ll pay €7 or €10 to take advantage of the salad bar, depending on the size of the plate that you choose.

4. Vivi Bistrot Organic Salad & Juice Bar in Rome

The Vivi Bistrot is a tiny salad and juice bar on the top floor of the famous luxury department store, the Rinascente Roma Tritone.

It’s not a build-your-own operation, but you can choose from many different juices and salads on the menu and make amendments. Always fresh and always delicious, with great protein options including sashimi fish!

If this is your first time hearing about Rinascente, then you should know this is the place to be if you’re interested in high-end shopping. They hold all the big labels like Gucci, Chanel, Burberry, Louis Vuitton etc.

5. Ami Pokè in Rome

Like I said, when there are lack of salad options one should always head to a poke house and just do it yourself.

Like most poke restaurants in Rome, Ami Poke works on a build-your-own concept. The salad bar is neatly laid out all day and you’ll choose everything from the base up. While traditional poke uses sushi rice as the base, there is always a greens option too — perfect to start your regular salad.

The only thing lacking in poke houses would be traditional salad dressings. Instead of balsamic vinegar or honey mustard you might have to experiment with soy sauce, yuzu and maybe some olive oil if you’re lucky.

It’s not perfect, but it’s a salad bar.

OPENING HOURS: Monday to Sunday — 12pm to 4pm // 6pm to 11:30pm
Address: Via della Madonna dei Monti, 38, 00184 Roma RM, Italy
Metro STATION: Colosseo

6. Temakinho in Rome

Temakinho is another poke house I would recommend for salad building. The ingredient bar is very organize and inclusive of a wide range of veggies, it’s easy to make something enjoyable.

They also have cooked chicken as a protein option, which many poke houses don’t. This is good for anyone looking to create a chicken salad.

I would avoid the soy based marinades like the wasabi and sriracha. Ask them to give you olive oil and vinegar from the main kitchen where they make the sushi.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
OPENING HOURS: Monday to Friday — 12:30pm to 3:30pm // 7pm to 12am
Address: Via dei Serpenti, 16, 00184 Roma RM, Italy
Metro STATION: Cavour
