A neo-classical masterpiece, Peles Castle in Sinaia, Romania, was the summer home of the Romanian royal family from 1883 until 1947.

Nestled within the Carpathian Mountains, Peles Castle was built along an existing medieval route that linked Transylvania and Wallachia.

Today the castle is considered one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. The castle draws its name from neighboring Peles Creek, which passes right through the courtyard.

The complex is composed of three monuments: Peleș Castle, Pelișor Castle, and the Foișor Hunting Lodge.

The best known is the Great Armory Room, hosting some of the finest collections of arms and armor, with over 4,000 pieces of weaponry that were collected. 

Many of the rooms of the castle are decorated so that they resemble the styles of various cultures from throughout the world.

The ticket should be kept during the whole visit supporting documents are needed for discounts for example students’ cards, and pensioner cards.

One can have options one can tour the ground floor and the first floor the costs are adults 100 lei, pensioners 50lei and children and students 25lei.

The other option is touring the ground floor, first floor, and second floor for adults 150lei, pensioners 75lei, and children and students 37.5lei.

6. They are different and beautifully designed rooms that can be seen in the Castle

The music room was used to host musical evenings organized by Queen Elizabeth. It has beautiful wood paneling on the walls with paintings above and a glorious wooden ceiling.

The Florentine room is completely different and is designed in the Italian Renaissance style and glows golden compared to the previous rooms.

Although it looks like a throne room, it was never used as such. Next to it is the mirror room with huge Venetian mirrors which took six months to be delivered.

The Moorish coffee room and the Turkish smoking room are unique and different, then there is the Louis XIV style theatre the castle is impressive.

Public visits are made within guided tours, admission is charged, and there is an additional photography fee.

The visiting hours are from 9 am to 5 pm. Wednesday through Sunday. On Tuesdays, the hours are 11 am to 5 pm.

The castle is closed on Mondays. These visiting hours are subject to change by the Romanian Culture Ministry. The castle is closed in November each year for maintenance and cleaning.

8. The famous German Johannes Schultz was the architect behind the exquisite Peles castle

The architect was a German, Johannes Schultz, chosen for his plan combining different classical European styles.

Construction took ten years and Peles Castle was inaugurated on October 7, 1883. It was the first castle in Europe to include central heating and electricity.

The castle is more of a palace than a castle and many have compared the style to that of Neuschwanstein castle in Bavaria.

The Music Room contained intricate pieces of teak furniture gifted by the Indian Maharajah of Kapurtala and was used as a salon by Queen Elizabeth.

The Uphill Residence features views of the mountain. Among the various facilities are ski-to-door access, free bikes, as well as a garden.

The Sinaia Monastery is 1.2 km from the guest house, while Peles Castle is 0.5 km from the property.

The construction of Peles Castle was commissioned by King Carol, and on August 1873, the foundations were laid in the form of a hunting house and a summer retreat for the Romanian royal family.

Besides the castle, other constructions were erected, such as a power plant, the Economic Building, the royal stables, the guards’ chambers, and the Foisor hunting lodge.

After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, the castle was once again opened to the public, and in 2007 it became the property of King Michael.
