The nearest domestic airport is the International Antonio Carlos Jobim Airport which is about 19 miles from Ipanema and it’s about a 30 minutes drive.

Furthermore, the nearest major international airport is Santos Dumont Domestic Airport which is located in the heart of the city and is about 10 minutes by car from Ipanema.

2. Ipanema was once a Farmstead but it rose to a Fancy District

In the late 19th century the district of Ipanema which actually means “stinky lake” in the indigenous language of Tupi was a huge farmstead named Ipanema village owned by the Ipanema count.

However, after the land allotment, the count built streets, small plazas, avenues, and tram lines to facilitate access to the general population and interest them in purchasing the land, and soon after the district started to take shape.

3. Ipanema’s rise to be one of Rios’s most Expensive Districts

After the song “Girl from Ipanema” became the face of Bossa Nova worldwide all eyes were on Ipanema.

The Ipanema beach is a well-known spot for the LGBTQI+ people, especially around Farme de Amoedo street where you will see the big rainbow flag indicating it’s the spot.

However, there is a specific part of the Ipanema beach that started becoming a reference point for LGBTQI+ people ever since the ‘80s when gay artists such as Cazuza would choose that specific spot to meet up with friends and acquaintances.

Furthermore, Farme de Amoedo street has since become a gay landmark in the city of Rio de Janeiro and you can find many specific gay bars and nightclubs in the surrounding street.

5. The Song “the girl from Ipanema” made Ipanema Beach known Internationally

In the year 1962, best friends Tom and Vinicius were walking down the Ipanema beach when they spotted a girl walking toward the water.

And the girl’s unique delicate walk and golden skin prompted the artists to compose a piece about her.

Moreover, Helo Pinheiro, the girl from Ipanema came to be aware that the song was inspired by her almost two years after it impacted the radios and as a result, she became a model both nationally and internationally.
