Copacabana beach is located on the Atlantic shore and it stretches from lifeguard watchtower two to lifeguard watchtower six.

However, there are historical forts at both ends one of them is called Fort Copacabana which was built in the year 1914 and is located at the south end of the outskirts of Lifeguard watchtower six, and the second is called Fort Duque de Caxias which was built in the year 1779 and it is located at the north end.

Moreover, Copacabana beach plays host to millions of revelers during the annual New Year鈥檚 Eve celebrations and in most years it has been the official venue of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

1. At first, Copacabana Beach was Not always called Copacabana

At first Copacabana beach wasn鈥檛 called Copacabana because way before the first colonizers arrived in Rio de Janeiro the place that is known today as Copacabana used to be called Sacopenapa.

The name was given by the local native Tupi indigenous Residents.

Moreover, sometime after the first non-Brazilian inhabitants started living there the Bolivian immigrants brought in a statue of Nossa Senhora de Copacabana a religious figure in the country.

Interestingly Copacabana is also the name of a city in Bolivia. Furthermore, soon after a church was built by the beach the locals who would go there to pray started referring to it as just Copacabana which means 鈥�observation of the blue.鈥�

After the church was demolished at the beginning of the 20^th century the Copacabana Fort was built where it stands until this day.

However, even though the church was gone the Copacabana district still pays homage to the saint that gave its name by having a street named Nossa Senhora de Copacabana.

2. Copacabana Beach hosts One of the Biggest Firework shows on the Planet

The New Year鈥檚 Eve celebration is a big festivity in Rio de Janeiro which attracts millions of people to the Copacabana beach sands every year.

During the festive day, some of Brazilian鈥檚 finest artists lend their talents to amazing live performances however the show’s real star here is definitely the fireworks at midnight putting on a color show in the sky that usually lasts from 15 to 20 minutes.

Furthermore, the thrill of the countdown plus watching those beautiful lights exploding over the sea is such scenery to be part of.

3. The famous Calcadao de Copacabana pattern along the Beach was inspired by a Portuguese architecture

The wavy walk path that separates the Copacabana beach sand line from the pavement is known worldwide which is one reason why the location is so famous.

Moreover, the pattern was actually inspired by Portuguese architecture whereby the pattern was originally seen on the mosaic ground in Lisbon鈥檚 Rocio Square.

However, the design symbolizes the merger between the waters from the Tejo river and the Atlantic Ocean.

4. Copacabana Beach is Dog Friendly

Since the year 2019 dogs are allowed at the beaches in Rio however as long as you have your vaccines up to date and you don鈥檛 litter by the sand and also have it on a leash at all times.

Furthermore, the south end of Copacabana is a famous spot for people bringing their dogs along.

5. The Copacabana Beach sands are Artificially resettled Annually

Most coasts and shores suffer the loss of sand due to climatic factors and for that reason, the sand needs to be resettled and reconditioned so that beach-goers can still enjoy the large sand strip in Copacabana.

Another key thing is the large sand strip also protects the buildings and establishments near the shore from the ocean鈥檚 back sweep and high tides which depending on their strength can be over the whole beach sometimes.

 Moreover, Copacabana beach’s first grounding process was done back in the 鈥�70s when the sand section of the shore was enlarged to expand the highway by the beach pavement.

Furthermore, from then on the sand is annually resettled through an internal continental shelf keeping the whole shore even and protected all year long.

6. Along Copacabana Beach, there is a Monument to a Famous Brazilian Writer and Poet

Carlos Drummond de Andrade was a famous writer and poet from Brazil.

However, a statue in Copacabana Beach pays homage to the poet and it is a landmark in Rio de Janeiro.

Moreover, the bronze monument is located between Posto five and six and it portrays Drummond sitting on a bench overlooking people passing by and the busy avenue in front of him. Furthermore, you can sit aside him and take a picture.

7. Copacabana Beach has Tons of Vendors

However, the high season is from November to March, and this is usually when prices are higher than in the off-season.

Copacabana beach has plenty to offer whether you need an umbrella and chair or a drink you can find it.

However, there is a lot of activity with teams competing against each other in a soccer match, volleyball or 鈥�fute-volley鈥� a game where you have a volleyball net but the players can鈥檛 use their hands but they can use their feet, head, and shoulder.

9. Copacabana Beach has Lots of Souvenirs

The beach is constantly filled with vendors promoting all types of things. Moreover, this is how a lot of people make their full-time income.

They sell anything from shirts, towels, bracelets, and souvenirs that will remind you of the awesome time you had in Copacabana.

Furthermore, at night you can find a really good selection of souvenirs whereby you will see people setting up tents in the median on the main street of Avenida Atlantica.

Note they only do this at night and the best selection at night is much better.

10. The Beach has Excellent Lifeguard Assistance

Getting continuous lifeguard support is really critical, particularly for a popular beach.

However, Copacabana beach doesn鈥檛 disappoint because its lifeguards are typically on duty from 8 in the morning until eight at night.
