Throughout his 18-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Roberto Clemente created a name for himself and was recognised as a phenomenal player. In the field, he played exclusively in right field and portrayed a good combination of athleticism and exceptional throws from deep right field to any base and catching baserunners off guard in the process. He was also known for his defensive prowess in that he prevented runners from trying to take an extra base.

7 Roberto Clemente’s induction to the Hall of Fame

Roberto Clemente’s life was cut short when he was involved in an accident on his way to deliver supplies as part of his humanitarian efforts to the victims of the Nicaragua earthquake. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 in honour of the impact he left in the field and outside as his presence was felt by others through his commitment to helping those in need.

8 Hall of Fame wrote his name wrong

The Hall of Fame erected the Roberto Clemente plaque in Cooperstown, New York but the wrote his name as Roberto Walker Clemente but his Latin American culture states that a person’s last name is followed by the mother’s maiden name. This means that he was born and given the name Roberto Clemente Walker. The Hall of Fame later corrected the name on the plaque in November 2000.

9 He was passionate about helping the youth

Being known for his philanthropic efforts, Roberto Clemente was known for having a soft spot for underprivileged youths in that he would occasionally host baseball clinics and let underprivileged youths in free of charge. He helped youths in Puerto Rico by giving them gloves and baseballs so that they could nature their talents and skills. He once stated that he understood the importance of sports and being a good citizen and thus worked towards teaching the kids the same values.

10 His induction to the Hall of Fame was fast

Roberto Clemente’s induction to the Hall of fame was fast in that the five-year waiting period that is usually put before a person is inducted to the Hall of Fame was waived which in turn made him the second player in history to for the waiting period to be waived. The Baseball Writers Association of America had to convene a special sitting to induct him into the hall of Fame.
