Surfer on the Castle Wave in Brandys – by
Now, when we think of surfing the first thing that comes to mind is the ocean and its huge waves, surfers trying to battle their way through them or to ride on top of them. On the contrary, the river surfing undoubtedly has an advantage for those wanting to practice their surfing skills before taking the trip and surfing the wild ocean waves.
The river waves are constant and to some extent predictable. Learning body movement and posture becomes easier on the river. Good about practicing on river waters is the feeling of travelling fast while in reality you are standing on one spot. It is said that you will be able to stand on board after only 30 minutes of practice!
Visit Իý nad Labem for your surfing experience

The castle is actually where the owners took the inspiration from and named the first-ever river wave in the Czech Republic ‘Vlna pod Zamkem’ which means ‘The Castle Wave’ (watch video ).
If you don’t feel like taking the bus by yourself, you can book a tour. Simply go to the and book your river surfing tour there. You can choose to do it online or visit the shop and book your adventure in person.
On the day of your tour, you will meet at the shop, and they will shuttle you directly to the river wave in Իý nad Labem. You will be able to enjoy the waves, rent the wetsuit and once you’re done, they will shuttle you back to Prague. The tour is also a good opportunity to meet the fellow-surfers from all over the world.
What to expect from the Vlna pod Zamkem and how it all began

Building the first river wave in the Czech Republic – by PhilB –
The first ever standing wave for river surfing in the Czech Republic – Vlna pod Zamkem – is about 80 cm high and 5 m wide. Its architect Jan Marsik describes it as relatively slow compared to the ocean waves, so it is relatively easy to ride for beginners.
If you have your board, take a 5” 4 or 6” one, ideally fish shaped or a shaped with a fat nose. If you don’t have your own board you can rent one at the spot. For those of you who have their own board, you should take an older one, as the base for the wave was made from the concrete and your board could easily get some scratches.
As this wave is the first river wave in the country it took Jan Marsik quite some time and energy to build it and to figure out what exactly was needed for the construction. When finally building the wave, the construction broke several times and Jan with his team had to fix the calculations. You can read the full story of Jan Marsik’s endeavours in building the wave .
