1) Charles University

First up, we have Charles University. Founded in the mid 14th-century, this is one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in Europe. The oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic, this university consists of 17 facilities located in Prague and other Czech cities. The beginnings of this institution was in 1349, created by Pope Clement VI. he modeled the university on the University of 鶹APP, with similar faculties and inspiration.

The university officially opened two years later, and was sectioned into “nations,” which were Bohemian, Bavarian, Polish and Saxon, breaking up the college population by nationality. As the university progressed, it became a Protestant academy in the early 15th century, having all Jesuits expelled during the Thirty Years’ War.

Decades later, the university was split into Czech and German universities in the mid 19th century to appease those who were not in favor of speaking bilingual. Nowadays, the modern university we see today has been progressing since 1945, when students took matters into their own hands to organize peaceful demonstrations after the 1989 revolutions, and initiating the “Velvet Revolution” in 1989 to work towards peace.

Charles University today has various locations throughout the city of Prague, with the main historical building situated in the Old Town, making up the university’s center. Consisting of 17 faculties based primarily in Prague, these faculties basically comprise the majors or topics that you choose to study, such as “Faculty of Medicine” or “Faculty of Law.”

This prestigious university ranked in the upper 1.5% of the world’s best universities in 2011, and is the second best university in Central and Eastern Europe. Those who are especially interested in geography and linguistics should look here, as it was ranked among the 51-100 best universities in the world according to the QS Subject Ranking.

2) Czech Technical University in Prague

Next up, we have the Czech Technical University in Prague. This is one of the largest universities in the country, and one of the oldest technology institutes in Central Europe. The origins of this university began in the early 18th-century, when the Czech emperor ordered the Czech state to provide education on engineering.

After some delay, the Czech state granted Willenberg, a Czech educator, professorship – the first engineering professor in Central Europe. He began teaching in 1718, growing from only 12 students to hundreds after 60 years of work.

Now a days, this university is ranked the best technical university in the country and the 220th in Engineering and Technology in the QS World Rankings in 2018. In order to get into this prestigious institution, you have a 52% chance of acceptance – don’t be deterred however.

The international acceptance rate rose from 2.4% in 2000 to 16.4% in 2017, showing there is hope for foreign students to attend this technical powerhouse. Although you may be accepted, that is the easy part.

A high percentage of students fail their first year of studies due to the difficulty and fast pace of the course load at this university, with a range of 23% to 47% failing year one.

If you are a foreigner that really wants to study here, you also have the chance to attend a separate university that has ties here – CTU has international agreements with 484 foreign universities. With over 2,000 staff and almost 19,000 students, the motto of the school rings true to all students and staff – knowledge is power.

3) Czech University of Life Sciences

Third on our list of education institutions, we have Czech University of Life Sciences. Established in 1906, this university now holds 18,000 students spread over 7 faculties, with 10% of the students being international.

The beginning arose when studies of agriculture were added to the Czech Technical University, and the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry followed. In 1952, the faculty became its own institution, and in 1966, the building and the university moved to the new campus at Prague-Suchdol where it has been ever since.

This university offers both bachelor’s and Master’s programs, with 40 programs being taught in English for the foreign students. Ranging from the Faculty of Economics to the Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences, this is a great choice for those who are especially interested in science and the environment.

CZU ranked 31st in the GreenMetric World University rankings, being one of the leading universities in terms of environment consideration. Featuring green technologies, sustainable activities, and teaching on environmental practices, the university has risen 15 spots since last year’s rankings in 2018.

4) University of Economics

Number four on our list of best universities in Prague, we have the University of Economics, or Š. Š were founded in 1953, creating the biggest public university of economics in the country. This institution offers six faculties, ranging from bachelor to MBA study programs.

Five of these faculties are located in the center of the city, with only the Faculty of Management being in the town of Jindrichuv Hradec. There are 15,000 students studying here, aiming to complete a bachelor’s degree in either Czech, English, and Russian, or a Master’s in Czech or English. Undergraduate students typically earn a Bachelor of Science after approximately 6 semesters of work, and 88% head onward to a career in the private sector.

The faculties at this university rank highly in the country, with the Faculty of International Relations ranking #1 nationwide, and the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics ranking third in the country. Another characteristic that sets this college apart is the emphasis on research.

The new research facility completed in 2005 aids in bringing in various influential speakers from across the world, like those from World Bank, an international financial institution. In addition, this university takes part in an exchange program, with over 800 students participating in the Exchange Program at the University of Economics, Prague.

All you need to apply for this program is command of the English language – and you don’t even need to present a certificate. The university relies on the partnering educational institutions to nominate trustworthy candidates, which makes it fairly easy to be considered for this once-in-a-lifetime position.

Overall, this university was ranked 60th by the Financial Times in the list of best European Business Schools, and in the range of 201-250 in the list of QS World University Rankings by Subject. If technology and sciences are up your ally, this institution is the best choice for you.

5) Anglo-American University

Ringing in number five, we have the Anglo-American University. This private university in Prague provides various courses in English. Founded in 1990 by Jansen Raichl, this institution came to light after the fall of communism.

The purpose of this college was to create a place that mixes Central European traditions with newer-age US and British academic theories, essentially bridging the gap in academia. In 2010, this university was the first one outside of the US to be invited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges to apply for institutional accreditation, showing the influence this school has had in such a short time period.

Approved of the accreditation in 2016, this was the first-accredited university in Europe by the WASC. Featuring one preparatory program on Common Law, 10 Bachelor programs, 4 Master’s programs, and one Professional Program about Business Administration, this university offers a wide range of subjects to study, making this a broad and accepting institutions for a variety of majors.

The new campus is located in the Thurn-Taxi Palace, a 17th-century monument owned by the city of Prague. This massive structure contains 16 classrooms, a computer lab, visual arts studio, eating area, and student lounges, allowing ample space to study and hangout all in one building.

The library is extensive, containing over 19,000 books for educational purposes, most of which are in English. The university also features an exhibition gallery called SPACE, displaying art installations created by the students.

This institution also highlights the importance of student life, having a student council that represents the students’ interests in various plans, represents the students in governance, and organizes activities.

6) Academy of Performing Arts in Prague

Last but certainly not least, we have the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. This university is located right in the heart of the city, and specializes in – well, you guessed it – arts.

Focusing on music, dance, drama, multi-media, and film, it is the largest art school in the country, with over 350 teachers and 1,500 students. Consisting of three faculties – Film and TV, Music and Dance, and Theater, this university offers Bachelor, Masters, and Doctorate courses.

This institution came to light in 1945 due to Presidential Decree. Professors in the old Prague Conservatory wanted to transform the school into a university, which helped to spur the moment. The Film and TV School (FAMU) was established in 1946, and helped to produce those people influential in the Czechoslovak New Wave movement in the 1960s.

The Music and Dance Faculty (HAMU) was created in 1945, providing education in the fields of music and dance, and contains 12 departments along with 3 research facilities. The Theater Faculty (DAMU) was also established in 1945 as the newly-created art specific university.

Now a days, this university features 3-year Bachelor programs, with the Master’s program taking an additional 2 years. The school requires a passing of entrance exams, which are specific to each faculty.

A great feature of this school is the 18,000-volume-academic-literature-library, which is free to all students. In addition to this grand library, the university features theaters, studios, and concert halls for student use.
