10 Things you didn’t know about Coach José Mourinho
He is widely regarded as one of the most divisive, arrogant, and disrespectful football managers in recent memory. He is frequently unpopular with referees and, on occasion, with his own players.
Despite all of the aforementioned perceived flaws, it is extremely difficult to dislike José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix.
The Portuguese-born manager, better known as Jose Mourinho or “The Special One,” brings humor, charm, compassion, passion, and entertainment to the game of football.

1. Jose is a Multilingual
Mourinho was dubbed the “translator” during his time as an assistant at Barcelona. While he has since gone on to become one of the most successful managers in recent history, some have refused to let go of the ‘translator’ label.
He can communicate in Portuguese, English, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, and French. He has also slammed those who still refer to him as a translator.
“I don’t think being able to speak five languages qualifies me as a translator,” he once said. But the fact that I can communicate helps me.”
During his time at Barcelona, the Portuguese manager famously assisted Sir Bobby Robson with communication. But Mourinho insists he isn’t happy with the title, even though his fluency in multiple languages helps him in his job.

2. Mourinho sneaked into the dressing room in a laundry bin for the team-talk
After being banned by UEFA for Chelsea’s two-legged Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich in the 2004/05 season, it was claimed that Mourinho arrived at Stamford Bridge early and hid in the dressing room in order to give the pre-match and half-time team-talk, before then being wheeled out of the ground in a laundry basket in order to avoid being seen.
Mourinho had been barred from contact with his players during both legs of a quarter-final Champions League tie against Bayern Munich after being punished for indiscretions in the previous round with FC Barcelona.
3. Jose quit B-school on Day 1
When it became clear that Mourinho would not succeed as a professional footballer, his mother, Maria Julia, encouraged him to pursue a career in business. And when he was 23, she enrolled him in a business school.
He quit after only one day. According to his mother, Mourinho did not suddenly become a perfectionist when he began coaching but had shown signs of his desire for things to be neat and organized since he was very young.
His mother, on the other hand, admitted in the contentious biography that their family relationship was not always joyful.
4. Mourinho Went Nine Years Without Losing A Home Game
Mourinho went more than nine years without losing a home game after his nine-man Porto team lost to Beira-Mar in February 2002.
That means he was unbeaten at home for 151 games with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid until April 2011, when Los Blancos lost to a weak Sporting Gijón, a team that hadn’t won at the Bernabeu in 16 years.
5. He once made it to the cover of Rolling Stone magazine
Jose Mourinho was named ‘Rockstar of the Year’ by the Spanish edition of Rolling Stone magazine at the end of 2011 and was featured on the front cover of their December issue.
The magazine praises his defiance, impertinent wit, and, above all, his provocative demeanor on the bench and at press conferences. It also includes extensive reports on the Portuguese manager, including interviews with former coworkers, journalists, and close friends.
Mourinho has been named Manager of the Year in Portugal, England, and Italy. In 2010, he was also named FIFA World Coach of the Year for the first time. He was also named ‘New Statesman of the Year 2005’ earlier in 2005 and was described as a man devoted to both family and work.

6. Police once cautioned Mourinho over his pet dog
Mourinho received a police caution in 2007 after allegedly refusing to allow police to quarantine his pet dog, Leya. According to eyewitnesses, the then-Chelsea coach, who had rushed home from an awards ceremony after receiving a tip from his wife, freed the animal from the hands of health officials and encouraged it to run down the street.
According to reports, the official wanted to quarantine the dog because he suspected it had been taken abroad and then returned to Britain without vaccinations. Mourinho was given a warning for impeding the authorities’ ability to do their jobs.

7. Mourinho contributed to tsunami relief efforts
Mourinho donated a jacket to be auctioned off in 2005 to benefit Tsunami Relief and other charities. Organiser Marc Thompson revealed that one bidder paid €25,800 for Mourinho’s coat at the Stamford Bridge fundraiser. The auction of Mourinho’s “lucky” jacket helped raise approximately £545,000 for the cause.
Four friends, including Michael Holland (son-in-law of film director Lord Attenborough), who lost his wife, daughter, and mother in the Asian tsunami, organized the event.
A rare print of the original Stamford Bridge stadium signed by Mourinho and the squad was also up for grabs.
8. He is a Ph.D. Holder
Mr. Mourinho, who began his sporting career as a PE teacher, received an honorary doctorate from Lisbon Technical University in 2009.
“I’m not sure I deserve this accolade,” he said in his speech at the school where he had graduated 20 years before. This is most likely the only time Mou has ever been humble.
9. Jose broke records in England
Mou led Chelsea to their first Premier League title since 1955 in his first Premier League season (2004-05). Chelsea finished with 95 points, the most ever in the Premier League, and the fewest goals conceded (15).
In his second and final season as Internazionale manager (2009/10), Mourinho led the Nerazzurri to an Italian treble that no manager or club had ever achieved.
Mou felt his work in Italy was complete after winning the unprecedented combination of the Champions League, Scudetto, and Coppa Italia, and he accepted a contract with Real Madrid. In 2011/12, Mourinho led Real Madrid to break the record for most points gained in a European league season (100).
10. Mourinho attempted to stop a book on him from being published
Mourinho had his first taste of defeat outside of football in 2004. Despite the Portuguese manager’s attempts to prevent it from being published in the first place, a book titled Jose Mourinho – Made in Portugal: The Official Biography by Portuguese journalist Louis Lourenco is a best-seller in the country.
The book depicted Mourinho’s family and their fear of him. However, he was unable to prevent its publication, and the book sold more than 15,000 copies.
The failure to stop the book’s sale was confirmed in court when the judge dismissed Mourinho’s appeal against the book’s release, adding insult to injury for the Portuguese manager.
