1. Donald Tusk grew up in Gdańsk

The Polish politician was born on 22 April 1957 in Gdańsk. His father was a carpenter and he was also called Donald Tusk. His mother was a nurse and she was called Ewa. His grandparents were Polish but also shared a German descent.

2. Donald Tusk’s political ambition was sparked by riots

He developed an early passion for politics and became interested in political activities during his teenage years. His love for politics was triggered by watching confrontations between riot police against striking workers when he was a teenager.

3. He is a University of Gdańsk alumnus

Tusk graduated from the University of Gdańsk in 1980. He pursued history studies at this institution. Additionally, he joined political affiliations while still studying. He was part of the Student Committee of Solidarity which opposed the communist rule in Poland during that era.

4. Tusk is acclaimed as the founder of several political parties

In 1990, he was involved in the formation of the center-right party, the Liberal Democratic Congress. In Poland it was known as Kongres Liberalno-Demokratyczny (KLD). During the 1991 elections, the party was successful in winning over 30 seats in the lower house of Parliament.

Moreover, in 1994 Tusk was part of the founders of the Freedom Union (UW) party. Hence he became the deputy leader of the party. Freedom Union was a merger of KLD with the Democratic Union (UD). He belonged to this party until 2001. Afterward, he co-founded the Civic Platform (Platforma Obywatelska) party in 2001. He led the party from 2003 up to 2014 and again from 2021 to date.

5. His political journey began in Poland’s lower Parliament

Donald Tusk was elected to the Sejm in 1991. It is the lower chamber of Parliament in Poland. He held the office until he lost his seat in 1993. During the 1993 election, the Liberal Democratic Congress to which Tusk belonged performed poorly.

6. Donald Tusk served as deputy speaker in both parliament chambers

He secured a seat in the Senate in 1997 with a Freedom Union party ticket after the party’s formation in 1994. In October 1997  he became the deputy speaker in the upper house of parliament. He served in that position until October 2001.

To add on, after forming the Civic Platform (PO) in 2001, it paved the way for him back into the Sejm which he had left in 1993. Thus he became the deputy speaker of Poland’s lower House of Parliament in October 2001. He occupied the office until October 2005.

7. He vied for Poland’s Presidency in 2005

During the 2005 presidential elections, Donald Tusk went up against the leading opponent Lech Kaczyński. In the first round of voting, Tusk managed 36% of the votes while Lech Kaczyński received 33%. Hence the second round of voting pushed Kaczyński to a win with about 54% votes. Thus Tusk was runners-up and garnered 45% of votes.

8. Tusk rose to the position of Prime Minister in 2007

He was appointed to the office of Prime Minister of Poland in November 2007 during the administration of President Lech Kaczyński. He was preceded by Jarosław Kaczyński who left the office after he lost his parliamentary seat in the same year. Tusk was reelected and served as Prime Minister until September 2014.

9. He was president of the European Council for five years

Donald Tusk assumed office as the leader of the European Council in December 2014. He took over office from Belgian former Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy. Donald was the head of the council until November 2019 when he was succeeded by Belgian politician Charles Michel.

10. He was president of one of the largest Europarties

Tusk was elected by the European People’s Party (EPP) as its president in December 2019. EPP is one of the largest transnational political parties or better referred to as Europarties in Europe.
