1. Heinz Field came after Three Rivers Stadium

Three Rivers Stadium served as a multipurpose facility and was the home field of the Steelers and baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates. They shared the field from 1970 until 2000.

On June 18, 1999, construction began for new stadiums for both Steelers and Pirates. In 2001 they moved to their new stadiums, Heinz Field for Steelers and the PNC Park for the pirates. Afterward, Three Rivers Stadium was imploded.

Heinz Field earned its name from the locally based H. J. Heinz Company which bought the naming rights in June 2001. The deal had it that Heinz would pay the Steelers a total of $57 million through 2021. The “57” figure was intentional to match the historical advertising slogan of the company “57 Varieties”.

2. Heinz Field changed to Acrisure Stadium in 2022

After the expiry of naming rights owned by Heinz in February 2022, the company kept off signing a new deal. But Art Rooney II, the Steelers President partnered with Acrisure CEO Greg Williams, and the stadium was named after the Michigan-based insurance brokerage company.

3. Acrisure Stadium seats 68,400 people

The horseshoe-shaped stadium has a capacity of 68,400 seats. Its horseshoe shape that has the south end open leaves fans to gaze at the spectacular view of Pittsburgh’s downtown skyline.

The National Hockey League (NHL) has held outdoor hockey games in Acrisure Stadium. The 2011 NHL Winter Classic between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals happened on the field.

The 2017 NHL Stadium Series game between the Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers also took place in the stadium. Countless concerts have occurred in the facility. The most famous was a performance by country music singer and songwriter Garth Brooks.

Garth Brooks’s show on May 18, 2019, hosted 75,000 attendees. It made a record as the highest-ticketed show in the history of Pittsburgh at the time.

The Steelers playing surface at the stadium is natural grass. The decision was arrived at after discussions and a review of available options. Natural grass took the day because the players championed the choice as they preferred playing on grass over any type of artificial turf.

The stadium appeared in the movie The Dark Knight Rises. It has also been featured on the television series The Bachelorette.

The Steelers’ debut at Acrisure Stadium was on October 7, 2001, against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Heinz Field now Acrisure Stadium has brought success to the Steelers since its opening in 2001. They have won conference championships and Super Bowl championships playing in the stadium.

That affirms why they have some of the best fans in the NFL. The team has sold out every home game since 1972. It’s no surprise their touchdown celebration made it to the top ten in the NFL.

In 2007, while the “tipping” of the Heinz ketchup bottles was still atop the scoreboard, it was named among the top ten touchdown celebrations in the league by ESPN.
