The Hinagdanan Cave, meaning 鈥淟addered鈥� in Cebuano, is one of the many wondrous caves in the island province of Bohol.

Hinagdanan Cave in Bohol is a popular tourist attraction that鈥檚 not to be missed during your visit. It is famed for not only its unique beauty but also the exciting story of how it came to be.

1. Hinagdanan Cave is located on the northern coastline of Panglao Island

Hinagdanan Cave is located on the northern coastline of Panglao Island in Bohol, Philippines. The cave is situated about 12 KM from Tagbilaran City, Bohol. This cave is popular for its stalactites and stalacmites.

2. You can reach the cave directly from Tagbilaran City

Travelers can reach the cave by taking a car or taxi directly from Tagbilaran City. For a hassle-free trip, you can also avail of tour packages that include the cave in their itineraries.

It鈥檚 said that the cave was discovered by a local farmer who was clearing his land and stumbled across two holes in the ground. I am guessing no flashlights were invented way back when and so he dropped a rock down the hole and heard a big splash.

4. Aside from discovering Hinagdanan Cave, the local farmer also discovered an enormous underground cave

 Curious, he constructed a ladder and descended into the hole to discover an enormous underground cave and freshwater lagoon!

The cave was accidentally discovered by a farmer; while clearing his land he found 2 holes, curious, he dropped a stone and heard a splash. He built a ladder 鈥渉agdan鈥� and was able to access the cave and find its hidden beauty, thus the origin of the name Hinagdanan.

5. Hinagdanan Cave also holds a bit of history from the Second World War

Aside from its awe-inspiring natural beauty, Hinagdanan also holds a bit of history from the Second World War.

This unique cave also played its role during World War II as a hideout for the Filipinos to escape the Japanese Imperial Army, though, unfortunately, they were still found hiding underground.

The cave鈥檚 entrance, which leads to a cavern that is less than a hundred meters long, can only be entered one at a time. The cave鈥檚 natural water droplets cause slimy and smooth friction on the walkway.

Hinagdanan is a karst cave which means it is made of limestones. Boasting several stalactite and stalagmite formations parallel to each other and a freshwater lagoon that is about 10 to 12 meters deep.

Due to its growing popularity, restaurants and souvenir shops have also opened close to the cave, so tourists and locals alike can enjoy a nice meal before or after their swim. After enjoying your trip to Hinagdanan, you can also check out other tourist spots near the area, such as the Dauis Church, Bikini Beach, or Bingag Beach.

9. The best way to get to reach Hinagdanan Cave Panglao is to rent a scooter

The best way to get to reach Hinagdanan Cave Panglao is to rent a scooter from one of the many scooter rental stores dotted around Alona Beach. Scooter rentals are around 300-350 pesos per day.

Alternatively, you can jump in the back of a tricycle and ask the driver to drop you over to the cave.

For a 15-minute drive in a tricycle, you can expect to pay around 100-150 pesos. Put your bartering skills to the test!

Travelers are required to pay a certain fee before entering the cave. A separate amount is also charged if you wish to swim inside the cave’s lagoon. 

10. The best time to visit Hinagdanan Cave would be around November to April

For a more convenient trip, the best time to visit Hinagdanan Cave would be around November to April when there are fewer chances of rainfall. The cave is open to tourists all year round from 7:30 AM to 5 PM.
