It is one of the oldest private universities and holds the oldest University charter in Asia, it is the university under roman Catholicism.
It was the only catholic research university in Manila and the Philippines which was started or established by Spanish Friar Miguel De Benavides and Archbishop of Manila, together with Frs. Domingo De Nieva and Bernardo De Santa Catalina.
On the 28th of April 1611,411 years ago. The University is located in Intramuros, the walled city of manila.
In the year 1611, it was named Collegio De Nuestra Senora Del Santisimo Rosario in its very beginning and later was renamed Collegio De Santo Tomas in 1625. Thomas Aquinas, in 1625.
Pope Innocent X elevated the college to a university in 1645, making it the oldest existing University in Asia.
The main aim or the role or function that was played by the STU was to prepare the young people or the individuals for the field of the priesthood and it also offered arts and philosophy.
The university was granted three titles from different popes whose titles were Pontifical universities. The name or the title was given by pope Leo XIII in 1902, the second title was Royal university which the title was granted by King Charles III in 1785.
The third title was Catholic University which was bestowed by Pope Pius XII in 1947, Manila, Philippines.
After some time, a pope sets foot at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), the largest Catholic university in the world in terms of the student population.
1. Among the Oldest University in Asia
In 1611 Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario was constituted through the contribution of then Manila Archbishop Miguel de Benavides.
It was renamed in 1625 Colegio de Santo Tomas, after its patron saint, St Thomas Aquinas.
Then in 1645, it was raised its status to a University by Pope Innocent X. For this reason, the university was established 411 years ago as a very fast tertiary institution to be stated as the catholic university

In 1865, Queen Isabella II authorized the university to direct and supervise all the schools in the Philippines.
Back then, the university-sanctioned all the scrutiny and sheepskin issued from other schools.
Then from 1942-1945, during the Second World War, the university academic life was discontinuous when the Japanese military unit turned the university into an immurement camp. Around 2500 civilians were detained here.
3. It was Granted Three Titles
The STU was granted three titles by different individuals, these titles were; Pontifical University, this title was granted by Pope Leo XIII in 1902.
The second title was Royal University, by King Charles III of Spain in 1785, and the third title was Catholic University, which was bestowed by Pope Pius XII in 1947.

On December 2010, the students gathered and made the largest human rosary which they called the “Q Rosary”. It was with an attempt to enter the Guinness World Records for forming the largest living rosary.
The Guinness authoritative suggested it to be the largest human cross. On Ash Wednesday in 2011, the university broke the world record for making the astronomic human cross.

6. The location of the original University
The original campus located in Intramuros, the Walled City of Manila, was first called Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario, and later renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas, in memory of the first Friar Theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas.
7. The disruption of the University Academics
Since its constitution in 1611, the university academic was discontinuous only twice. The first time was from 1898 to 1899, during the second phase of the Philippine Revolution and the Filipino-American War.
The second time, was from 1942 to 1945, when the Japanese Military control Power during the Second World War changed the UST campus into a camp where around 2,500 were detained.
8. The transfer of the University from its original location
Due to the continuing increase in enrollment of more students, the university was forced to locate the university in a place where it could accommodate all the students.
The new location was in the Sampaloc district, whereby the land was big enough to cater to the university’s requirements. In actual fact, the total hectares of the land were 21.5 hectares.
At this location, they were comfortable and fitted all the students and buildings until destruction during the second world war.
9. It is a Private University
It is a private University under the Roman Catholic, and the reason for this it is because of the name that it had been given by Pope Pius XII in 1947, The Catholic University.
The university was not under the government of Asia but it was a Catholic University under the catholic church.
10. The University Seal has a Meaning
Some of the constituents existing in the University Seal include the Design of the papacy, laurelled by the apostolic tiara, the overgarment of weapons of the Kingdom of León, screening the lion erect, and the seal of Manila screening the sea Lion.
The seals of the University of Santo Tomas is a protective covering one-fourth by the State Cross.
Overlying on the cross is the sun of Saint Thomas Aquinas, patron of Catholic schools, in which the university is titled. The sun was really successful related to the Sun of May.
