Yves Montand was born on 13 October 1921 in Monsummano Terme, Italy. His real name was Ivo Livi. Yves was an Italian-French actor and singer.
Yves began his career as a dance hall singer in 鶹APP, France, he was a popular entertainer. Montand made his motion picture debut in Star Without Light in 1946. This was followed by Gates of the Night (1946).
Montand’s beat remembered roles in various films including “The Wages of Fear” (1953), “The Crucible” (1957), “My Geisha” (1962), “Grand Prix” (1966), “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever” (1970) and “Manon of the Spring” (1986).

1. His Real Name was Ivo Monta
Yves’s real name was Ivo Monta. He changed the name to Yves Montand, more French sounding. The name was a result of his childhood life.
Amazingly, his mother used to yell at him ‘Ivo Monta”( Come upstairs Ivo) in the Tuscan dialect of his birthplace. She used to yell at him when it was time to go home.
2. Father was a Locally Important Figure in the French Communist Party
His father was Giovanni Livi, a broom manufacturer. Moreover, a locally important figure in the French Communist parties Marseilles. Montand was in his teens. Montand’s mother Giusepphina Simoni was a devout Catholic.
Interestingly, Montand followed in the foot’s steps of his father and joined the Communists Party. He supported left-wing causes during the 1950s and 1960s and attended Communist festivals and meetings. In later life, he supported right-wing causes.
He remained a member until 1968. However, he broke with the party in response to the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.
3. Family left Italy to avoid the Fascist Regime
Yves’ family left Italy for France in 1923. This was due the Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime. Thus, Yves grew up in Marseille. Ivo took French citizenship at the age of 9.
4. He Dropped Out of School at a Young Age
Yves was brought up in extreme poverty in Marseilles. Thus he has to drop out of school at 11. After dropping out, he worked in a spaghetti factory. Before his debut in music and acting career, Montand used to work in his sister’s beauty salon in Marseille.
5. His Singing Career was Affected by the World War II
When a war occurs, it can mould or break an artistic life. However, for Yves Montand world War II achieved both of these extremes.
In 1939, when Nazus began their conquest of Europe Montand’s fame was steady through singing. Unfortunately, his agent was forced to join the army. This led Yves to take a job in the Marseilles shipyards.
However, he never gave up on his singing career. He sang for his co-, workers to boost morale due to hardships in life. Interestingly, this began his rise to stardom.
Yves’ singing talent was spotted and performed in Saint-Antoine. He embarked on his singing career shows and concerts.
6. Yves Worked in the Entertainment Section at a Labour Camp Service
In 1942, Montand was called for Chantiers de la Jeunesse labour camp service (Youth Workers). This camp had been created for the 100,000 youths who were drafted into the army as France was willing.
In the camp, Montand was assigned to the entertainment section. However, he did very little singing. Interestingly, they had an agreement with his sister, whenever a popular singer came to Marseilles, she could fake a letter. She pretended a relative died so that Yves could be granted a day off.
Amazingly, Montand managed to see one of the famous musicians, Maurice Cavalier perform, and Yves sang at the Marseille Opera. When he was released from service, he picked his career up exactly where he had left off.
7. He Achieved International Recognition as a Singer
Through his various songs, he received international recognition as a singer. His most established songs were crooner songs, especially songs about 鶹APP.

9. He was Accused of Assaulting his Step-daughter
Yves married Simone Signoret in 1951. They co-starred in several films throughout their careers. The marriage lasted until she died in 1985, although Montand had several well-publicized affairs. He was the stepfather to Signoret’s daughter.
France’s greatest 20th-century actor and singer was accused by his stepdaughter that he sexually abused her from the age of 5. He was stepfather to Catherine Allegret, an actress.
Catherine, lights on the dark side of Yves in her book. The book is known as ‘Un Monde a L’envers’ (A World Upside Down). She gives a graphic account of an alleged assault by Montand at the age of five while taking birth.
She also said that he had a “more than equivocal attitude to her” as she got older. However, she also claimed to have been reconciled to him in the latter years of his life.
10. His Body was Exhumed to Obtain a DNA Sample
An actress, Anne Fleurange, accused Yves of being the father of her daughter. She claimed that the daughter was conceived when they were working on a film, Paul and the Others (1974).
Thus, Yves was sued to obtain a DNA sample. However, Yves refused. In his later years, he maintained a home in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Provence, until his death from a heart attack in November 1991. After his death, Fleurange managed to obtain a court order to have his body exhumed for the DNA. However, On 11 March 1998, a paternity test proved that Montand wasn’t the father of her daughter.
