1. His Father was Head of Bourg-la-Reine’s liberal Party
Évariste Galois was born on 25 October 1811. His parents were Nicolas-Gabriel Galois and Adélaïde-Marie (née Demante). His father was the leader of Bourg-la-Reine’s liberal party and a Republican.
Moreover, he was a mayor of a village. He became a Mayor after Louis XVIII returned to the throne in 1814.
2. His Mother was for His Son’s Education for the First Twelve Years
Galois’ mother was a fluent reader of Latin and classic literature. Thus, she was Galois’ teacher for his first twelve years.
However, in October 1823, he joined the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. He was recognized by his teacher as a brilliant student.
3. His interest in Mathematics developed at the Age of 14
He read Elements de Geometre by Adrien Marie Legendre. At age of 15, he read various books on mathematics. In 1828, Galois attempted an entrance examination for Ecole Polytechnique.
However, he failed the exam due to a lack of good explanations on the oral section of the examination. He later joined Evole Normale, a much inferior institution for his mathematical studies.
Évariste Galois never gave up, he tried for the second time to join Ecole Polytechnique, but he failed again. Interestingly, he decided to take baccalaureate examinations which enabled him to join Ecole Normale.
4. His Memoir about Equation Theory was Never Published
Galois’ made fundamental discoveries in the theory of polynomial equations. This was after his first paper, on continued fractions, was published.
He submitted two papers about polynomial equations to the Academy of Sciences. However, Augustin-Louis Cauchy refereed these papers, but he refused to accept them for publication for reasons that remain unclear.
However, in February 1830, he was advised by Cauchy to submit it to the Academy’s secretary Joseph Fourier. To be considered for the Grand Prix of the Academy. Unfortunately, Fourier died and the Memoir was Lost.
5. He was Expelled from École Normale
Galois was brought during a time of political turmoil in France. Charles X succeeded Louis XVIII in 1824. However, Charles’ party suffered a significant electoral setback in 1827. By 1830 the opposition liberal party became the majority.
Thus, Charles staged a coup d’etat in response to political opposition from the chamber. Charles issued the infamous July Ordinance. Unfortunately, Galois was locked in by the school’s director while their counterparts at the Polytechnique were making history in the streets. Infuriated, Galois wrote a harsh letter attacking the director. This made Galois to be kicked out of the school.
6. He Joined the Staunchly Republican Artillery Unit of the National Guard
Galois dropped out of school before his official expulsion date. He enlisted in the Staunchly Republican Artillery Unit. However, he split his time between political ties and his mathematical work.
After joining, the Artillery Unit of the National Guard was disbanded due to controversy surrounding the unit. They were concerned that they might topple the government. Around the same time, 19 members of the unit were detained and accused of plotting to overthrow the government.
7. Évariste Galois was Detained
The members of the unit were cleared of all the charges in April 1831.9n may be the same year, a banquet was held in their honour with several illustrious guests. However, the discussion turned riotous.
Galois stood up at one point and proposed a toast saying “To Louis Philippe”. He was holding a dagger above his cup. The republicans at the banquet applauded after interpreting Galois’ toast as a threat to the king’s life. He was taken to custody at Saint- Pelagie.
In the same year, Galois was heading a protest, wearing a uniform of the disabled artillery. He was heavily armed with rifles, pistols, and daggers. This led to his second arrest. He received a sentence of 6 months for the crime of wearing a uniform illegally. He spent his time in prison developing mathematical ideas and after nine and a half months, he was released.
8. He was among the Founders of the Branch of Algebra known as Group Theory
Galois considered groups. He was the first person to use the term group in the technical sense. This made him one of the founders of the branch of algebra known as group theory.
He was the developer of a normal subgroup. Galois also introduced the idea of a finite field, also called the Galois field.
9. Galois’s Theory was his Most Significant Contribution to Mathematics
Galois develop the Galois Theory. In this theory, he understood that the algebraic solution to a polynomial equation is related to the structure of a group of permutations associated with the roots of the polynomial, the Galois group of the polynomial.
Galois discovered that if one can identify several subgroups of its Galois Group, each one normal in its successor with an abelian quotient, thus its Galois group is solvable. This approach proved to be fruitful. The mathematicians applied it to a variety of other areas of mathematics. Additionally, to the theory of equations, where Galois first used it.
10. He Died of Gunshots in his Abdomen
Shortly after his release from prison, he was shot in the abdomen. His adversaries and his seconds abandoned him. He was discovered by a passing peasant farmer. However, he passed away the following morning.
