Musée Marc Chagall is a French national museum. It is located in Nice in the Alpes-Maritimes. Also referred to as the National Museum Marc Chagall Biblical message.

It was dedicated to the work of painter Marc Chagall. With the support of the minister of culture André Malraux. The museum was inaugurated in 1973.

The Artist provided details about the creation of the museum garden. He also decided on the place of his works in the museum. However, the chronological order of the work was not followed.

Chagall decorated the concept hall by creating the mosaic. It overlooked the pond and blue stained glasses.

2. The Museum was Dedicated to the Russian-born French Artist

The Musée National Marc Chagall was dedicated to Marc Chagall. He was born in Moishe Shagal, liozna, near Vitebsk, Russian Empire.

However, Marc spent much of his life in Âé¶¹APP and the French Riviera. He took french Nationality and was a French celebrity.

He bought a house in Vence in the French Riviera. Marc worked with Ceramics in Valluris with Picasso.

He decorated the Chapel du Calvaire in Vence. This was one of his greatest achievements.

Over, 20 years the Artist produced amount other stained glass windows on Metz, Reims, Jerusalem, the UN HQ in New York City, Zurich and Mayence and the ceiling of the Âé¶¹APP Opera.

In 1966, he donated the Biblical Message to the French State. This inspired the creation of the Chagall museum in Nice

The museum was during the life of the artist. This was with the support of the then Minister of Culture André Malraux. It was completed and inaugurated on 7 July 1973, on Chagall’s birthday.

The centrepiece of the collection is the famous Bible Cycle. It is also referred to as the National Museum Marc Chagall Biblical Message (Musée national Message biblique Marc Chagall).

As it houses a series of seventeen paintings illustrating the biblical message. The series illustrates the books of Genesis, Exodus and the Song of songs

Chagall made direct supervision during the construction of the museum. His idea of a spiritual abode required a peaceful setting.

The architect chosen to build the museum was André Hermant. He offered balance through understated walls and rigorous forms. That highlighted and showcased Chagall’s art.

The large rooms of the museum exhibit 12 paintings that illustrate Genesis and Exodus. The large decorative windows of the auditorium were Chagall’s idea.

 Moreover, Chagall decorated the concept hall by creating a mosaic. It overlooked the pool and blue stained glasses.

6. Building of the Musée National Marc Chagall was Designed as a Place for Meditation and Serenity

The building interiors provide a sense of calmness. Achieved by the combination of bright materials such as plaster and limestone, with generous use of daylight.

The garden that surrounds the building also plays an important role in giving out calmness. It has an olive tree, cypresses and maritime pines.

Chagall collaborated with Henri Fish, a landscape designer. By choosing several flowering plant species because of the colours such as white and blue.

Moreover, several Africa Lily Plants were also included. That blossom there every 7th July, in time for Chagall’s birthday.

7. The Creation of Man at The Musée National Marc Chagall

This is one of the paintings in the biblical paintings of Marc Chagall. The painting is organised in two registers.

On the top of the painting, a spinning sun, invaded by yellow light, whose colours evoke the Orphism of Delaunay. Carries in its Wheel the Jewish people and episodes of the biblical story.

One of the people on the wheel is Christ on the Cross. Chagall painted the Christ loins as girded with the shawl. That Jewish wear in the synagogue.

In the lower register, an angel is seen carrying the Abandoned Adam. The angel emerges from the primordial ocean. Thus where Chagall represented the animals that were created before man.

He painted the feature of angels like the wearing of trousers. This demonstrated the artist’s identification with him whereby he asserts himself as the creator and bearer of the divine message.

The Musée National Marc Chagall has a heaven painting. It presents the creation of Eve and temptation. The painting includes all the members of creation, men, animals and many hybrid figures.

 The creatures live in harmony in the luxuriance of plants and water. Underlined by tones of green and blue colour.

On the left side, Adam sits cross-legged, raising his arm. The white cloud represents God. A sort of mysterious cocoon underlining the prodigy of creation, from which emerges an Eve with a modest gesture.

On the right, appears an entwined couple. With only two arms and three legs. Chagall represents the couple as if they are about to share the forbidden fruit. That of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil that will make them equal to God.

The exhibition explores the diversity of printmaking techniques practised by Chagall. He engraved his work on wood or metal and lithography.

During the exhibition, visitors get to learn about the great achievements of the Chagall. Such as the innovative projects initiated by the dealer and publisher of art Ambroise Vollard.

The exhibition presents less known works such as letters D’hivernage. Created from a collection of poems by Leopold Sedar Senghor. Moreover autobiographical books such poems In which the artist illustrated his poems.
