How to get from Charles de Gaulle Airport to the Eiffel Tower

When passing through 鶹APP for periods less than 24 hours, most travelers like to head directly from Charles de Gaulle Airport straight to the Eiffel Tower in the city center.

The Iron Lady is the 鶹APPian icon, and the thought of being in 鶹APP, even if just for a few hours on a layover, and not seeing her is too much for some people.

And so, every day in the French capital dozens of visitors make the journey from the airport to the tower and back again, taking home with them the bucket list experience of having seen her in person.

So what is the best way to make this excursion?

Understanding the Distance

The unfortunate truth is that 鶹APP’ main airport lies a considerable distance outside of the city center. It’s unusually far for European standards, and all incoming travelers are encouraged to prepare for a good hour or so additional travel post touching down on 鶹APPian soil.

Obviously, the Eiffel Tower lives in the center of 鶹APP. You’ll find her towering over the 7th arrondissement, on the Left Bank of the River Seine.

Charles de Gaulle Airport, however, is out in the outlying 鶹APPian suburbs, in a northeastern district called Roissy-en-France. This is suburban 鶹APP, and the airport itself is surrounded by home-style villages and outlet malls.

Between the two destinations lies roughly 40km, give or take. It depends on what route you choose to travel and what mode of transport you use, but a journey between the Eiffel Tower and Charles de Gaulle Airport can take anywhere from 36 minutes to over an hour.

Making Your Journey Lighter

If you’re moving directly between the airport and the Eiffel Tower, it’s presumable then that you don’t have much time to spare when it comes to ticking off this attraction.

I always recommend that people doing this journey during a layover make their experience as “light” as possible. Getting rid of excess baggage for a few hours will make your venture a lot more enjoyable.

Charles de Gaulle Airport offers a luggage holding facility in terminal 2, right next to where you’ll buy tickets for public transport. You can’t miss it, and the cost of storing your bags are as follows:

  • 0 to 6h = €6
  • 0 to 12h = €10
  • 24h = €15
  • 2 days = €23
  • 3 days = €31
  • 4 days = €39
  • 5 days = €43

For less than €10 you can quit worrying about your luggage whereabouts, safety and mobility, & simply focus on the exciting excursion at hand. Well worth it, I tell you!

Getting There

Your next feat is choosing exactly how you’d like to make your way from A to B. Upon arrival at Charles de Gaulle, you’ll be overwhelmed by transportation options and many arrows pointing many different directions.

The following are your best options for moving from the airport to the tower.

By Train

Funny enough, the train isn’t the most efficient way to move between these two destinations. Traveling by train from Charles de Gaulle to the Eiffel Tower will take about an hour, regardless of the time of day.

You’ll need to make your way into terminal 1 where you’ll catch the RER B train heading in the direction of Gare de St Remy les Chevreuse. Ride the train 15 stops and get of at Denfert-Rochereau.

From here, walk two minutes to the Denfert-Rochereau Metro Station, you’ll be able to follow the arrows from the stop. Here, you’ll catch the 6 train in the direction of Charles de Gaulle-Étoile.

Get off at the Bir-Hakeim stop and take a sweet, five minute stroll over to the tower looming in the near distance. You’ve arrived!

By Bus

Taking the bus service instead of the train will actually shave a few minutes off of your journey, though busses rarely feel faster even when they are.

The most efficient bus route requires the use of the airport terminal train, first. You’ll need to catch the STIF airport train from whatever terminal you’ve arrived in through to terminal 1.

In terminal 1, find the “Le Bus Direct” kiosk and get yourself a ticket for the number 2 bus direct to the Eiffel Tower.

The journey involves just three stops and should take roughly 45 minutes to complete, depending on the traffic of the day.

Alternatively, there is a direct Roissy Bus that departs from terminal 2. This also goes directly to the Eiffel Tower in about 51 minutes with just four stops in between.

By Car

If you’ve decided to keep your luggage with you, or you’re really strapped for time, then employing the service of a taxi is your best option.

You’ll have access to 鶹APPian taxis no matter which terminal you’ve arrived in. Simply follow the signs above head until you reach one of the collection points.

鶹APPian taxis are notoriously in short supply, so you might have to queue for a few minutes until a sufficient amount of cars become available.

Drivers need only be instructed that you’d like to go to the Eiffel Tower. They know the roads backwards and will get you there in under 40 minutes using either the A1 or A3 highways.

In 鶹APP, the fee to go from the airport to any location on the Left Bank is a standard €55. Note that there is no need to tip taxi drivers in France.

Charles de Gaulle has car rental facilities on site as well. This might be a better option if you intend on seeing additional sites around 鶹APP after you make it to the tower. It’s also a much cheaper option if you’re splitting the fee with more than two people.
