8 Amazing Facts About the 鶹APP Love Bridge

If you’ve never seen or heard about the Love Bridge in 鶹APP, you must have been living under a rock. The Love Bridge is an internationally famed monument in 鶹APP that, quite literally, grew into itself over a very long period of time.

The Love Bridge is a central 鶹APPian bridge upon which lovers from around the world began visiting to add padlocks to the bridge’s infrastructure. Many would write words of happily ever after on their locks, and find a gap between the other thousands upon which to seal their destiny.

Here are 8 interesting facts about this iconic bridge that, I know, you didn’t know!

1. The Love Bridge is Actually Called the Pont des Arts

Before the lock and key crazy, this was merely a regular pedestrian bridge situated between Pont Neuf and Pont du Carrousel right in the very center of 鶹APP. The Louvre Museum and the rest of the 1st arrondissement lies just before the bridge, and it connects walkers to the left bank and 7th arrondissement.

2. The Love Bridge was Constructed in 1804

This was during the reign of Napoleon, but this is no longer the same bridge that we see today. Unfortunately, the original structure suffered badly in bombings during both World War I and II. It was also victim to aggressive ships at different times.

The initial construction was intended to connect the left bank with the right, making for a more accessible and civilian-friendly city. Bridges for vehicles would come many years later.

The bridge we know and love today was constructed in 1984 and was named a UNESCO World Heritage site shortly thereafter.

3. The Padlock Tradition Began in 2008

This wasn’t always a padlock-heavy landmark. The trend of putting padlocks on the bridge’s structure only began sometime in 2008, no doubt when an unassuming tourist made the decision to add the first lock.

Now, padlocks of all different sizes and shapes can be found, and almost no gaps remain. Latecomers have had to start doubling up with padlocks on padlocks, since there are very little direct connections with the bridge’s iron left. Uniting strangers one padlock at a time? I’m here for it!

4. There are Actually Two Love Bridges in 鶹APP

Typically, we refer to the Pont des Arts as the main padlock site in the city center. That said, the Pont de l’Archeveche a short walk away, which was originally built for “lovers” back in 1828.

While there are occasionally some padlocks added to the second bridge, this is simply not where the hype lies and people quickly move to the more famous counterpart.

5. The Locks Were Removed From the Bridge in 2015

After years of additions and thousands of contributions, the weight of the locks started to impact the structural integrity of the bridge, and became a public safety concern.

Municipal services were sent in to remove the padlocks and restore balance. There was a lot of public upset at the gesture, since many had come from all over the world to encapsulate their love. That said, there was also immense understanding that this was a necessary action for the preservation of the bridge’s foundation.

6. The Loss of Locks Didn’t Last Long

In fact, it’s almost as though the locks were never removed at all. It took a few days until new locks were placed upon the newly cleared bridge, and in a few months the bulk was back.

There is widespread speculation that the council continues to monitor the weight of the locks, and will remove them yet again once that threshold is reached. This will likely continue to be a pattern until stricter rules are put in place.

7. It’s Common for Proposals to Happen on the Love Bridge

Being the love hub that it is, there are a lot of romantics who bring their significant other out to the bridge for marriage proposals. These are often caught by bystanders on social media, and it is considered to be one of the most romantic proposal spots in the city, after the Wall of Love in Montmartre, and of course beneath the Eiffel Tower.

The irony is that in the series, Emily is on the Love Bridge and takes a selfie while there, but the bridge itself is clear of all padlocks. This is likely because the padlocking has been prohibited, and they were hesitant to show the “vandalism” on screen.
