France, in Western Europe, encompasses medieval cities, alpine villages and Mediterranean beaches.

鶹APP, its capital, is famed for its fashion houses, classical art museums including the Louvre and monuments like the Eiffel Tower.

1.  Simone de Beauvoir-Philosopher

Simone de Beauvoir was born on January 9, 1908 in 鶹APP to Georges Bertrand de Beauvoir and Françoise Brasseur. 

She was one of the most preeminent French existentialist philosophers and writers.

She worked alongside other famous existentialists such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus and Maurice Merleau-Ponty.

de Beauvoir produced a rich body of writings including novels, essays, biographies, autobiographies, and monographs on philosophy, politics, and social issues. 

She was known for her 1949 treatise The Second Sex, a detailed analysis of women’s oppression and foundational writing of contemporary feminism;

 She is considered the greatest French woman of the 20th century, mother of the modern women’s movement.

When de Beauvoir passed on her ashes found their place next to those of Jean-Paul Sartre, her partner in life though never in marriage.

2. Joan  of Arc – Saint

Joan of Arc –Jeanne d’Arc   (1412 – 30 May 1431), who called herself “Joan the Maiden in the 15th century and is now nicknamed “The Maid of Orleans” is considered a heroine of France for her role during the Hundred Years’ War. 

She is also a saint in the Roman Catholic Church.

She testified before Charles VII at Chinon that she had received visions from the archangel Michael, Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine of Alexandria instructing her to support and recover France from English domination.

After their interview, Charles sent Joan to the siege of Orleans as part of a relief army. 

she was granted nobility for leading the French to several other victories including taking of Saint-Pierre-le-Moutier. 

However, a risky skirmish on May 23, 1430, led to her capture.

Burned at the stake as a heretic after sentencing by a tribunal of pro-English clergy but she was later cleared of the charges during an appellate trial of the Inquisition on 7 July 1456 and canonized as a saint of the Catholic Church on 16 May 1920.

3. Charles de Gaulle – Statesman

Charles Andre Joseph Marie de Gaulle (22 November 1890 – 9 November 1970) was a French army officer and statesman who led France against Nazi Germany in World War II.

He chaired the Provisional Government of the French Republic from 1944 to 1946 to restore democracy in France.

In 1958, he came out of retirement when appointed  Prime Minister by President Rene Coty.

He rewrote the Constitution of France and founded the Fifth Republic after approval by referendum.

Charles de Gaulle was elected President of France later that year, a position to which he was reelected in 1965 and held until his resignation in 1969.

4. Marie Curie – Scientist

Marie Curie is a woman of firsts.

Marie Salomea Skłodowska Curie (7 November 1867 to 4 July 1934) was a  naturalized French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity.

She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and the only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice and the only person to win the Nobel Prize in two scientific fields.

Her husband, Pierre Curie, was a co-winner on her first Nobel Prize, making them the first-ever married couple to win the Nobel Prize.

She was the first woman to become a professor at the University of 鶹APP in 1906.

The importance of  Curie’s work is reflected in the numerous awards bestowed on her.

She received many honorary degrees and honorary memberships of learned societies throughout the world.

It took a long time to finally appreciate her as an outlier, intelligent and courageous.  She is but one of the 20th century’s most important scientists.

5. King Louis – Royalty

Louis XIV, the ‘Sun King’, was King of France from 1643 to 1715 and widely held to be the greatest monarch of his age.

Louis was born on 5 September 1638 at St Germain-en-Laye. He became king at the age of four on the death of his father, Louis XIII.

Since Louis was a child, his mother Anne of Austria, served as regent, assisted by Louis XIII’s chief minister, Cardinal Mazarin.

Louis’s early years were marked by a series of rebellions against his mother and Mazarin, which were known as the ‘Fronde’.

These created in him a lifelong fear of rebellion, and a dislike of 鶹APP, prompting him to spend more and more time in 鶹APP, southwest of 鶹APP.

In 1660, he married Maria Theresa, daughter of Philip IV of Spain.

Louis’s reign was marked by aggressive French foreign policies. The last three decades of Louis’s reign were marked by almost constant warfare.

Louis XIV died on 1 September 1715, shortly after the Peace of Utrecht which ended the War of the Spanish Succession.

6. Marie Antoinette XVI-   Royal

Queen of France before the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette (1755–93) better known as Marie Antoinette, was the last queen of France.

She helped provoke the popular unrest that led to the French Revolution and to the overthrow of the monarchy in August 1792.

She became a symbol of the excesses of the monarchy and is often credited with the famous quote “Let them eat cake,” although there is no evidence she said.

Marie Antoinette was beheaded nine months after her husband by order of the Revolutionary tribunal. 

Described by her brother, Emperor Joseph II, as “honest and lovable,” Marie Antoinette was an Austrian princess.

She remains one of the most iconic characters in ձ’ rich history.

She arrived at the French Court aged only fifteen.

From the time of her marriage to the Dauphin Louis, heir to the throne, she found it difficult to adapt to French customs and when she became Queen she committed blunders out of ignorance and arrogance.

7. Napoleon Bonaparte – Military Strategist

The Little Corporal  French byname Le Corse or Le Petit Caporal   was born August 15, 1769, Ajaccio, Corsica .

He went to three schools most spoke Spanish and could barely speak french earning ridicule from classmates.

He graduated from a military school in 鶹APP with a fairly low rank becoming a 2nd Lieutenant in the French army.

By then his father had died of stomach cancer though not the oldest son he took charge of the family at the age of 16.

He fought for Pascal Paopi a leader seeking independence of Corsica from France, he won.

Poali turned against Napoleon and his family had to flee. French revolutionaries had beheaded King Louis XVI and France was a republic.

He was appointed the commander of French forces in Italy for quashing rebellions. His troops conquered much of Italy and Austria. A hero was born.

With his military planning, quick marches, and war strategy he defeated Egyptian forces.

Napoleon also attempted to invade what is now modern Syria but failed. He deserted his troops, returned to France and staged a coup and become 1st consul of the country at age 30.

Reformed the country’s education system, banking system and instituted a Napoleonic code akin to a penal code.

He crowned himself emperor, censored opposition, exiled critics and installed his images in public buildings.

Under his rule, France was always at war with its neighbours. 

After defeat in the Battle of Waterloo, he was exiled to St. Helena Island.

8.  Zenadine Zidane – Proffesional Footballer

Zinedine Yazid Zidane (1972), popularly known as Zizou, is a French former professional football player who played as an attacking midfielder.

He most recently coached Spanish club Real Madrid and is one of the most successful coaches in the world.

Also widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, Zidane was a playmaker renowned for his elegance, vision, passing, ball control and technique.

 He received many individual accolades as a player, including being named FIFA World Player of the Year in 1998, 2000 and 2003, and winning the 1998 Ballon d’Or.

Zizou was a passionate inspirational, exhilarating, heroic and entertaining former player who was arguably the best to have ever come from France.

Off the pitch, he is a devoted family man who supports many charities.

9.  Moliere – Playwright

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin ​15 January 1622  known by his stage name Moliere was France’s most illustrious playwright. He was a central figure in French culture. 

His genius was three-pronged, firstly,  how he manipulated the language, his ability to blend the French of peasant and that of the marquee.

Secondly, his Stagecraft was a masterstroke as he understood what the audience wanted.

Thirdly,  the construction of his three-dimensional characters around the duality of greatness and misery.

He is one of the greatest comic geniuses the world has seen, and undoubtedly the master of “social comedy.”

Almost singlehandedly, he prompted international acclaim for French social comedy and established the form as one of the more enduring types of comedy

Even after Moliere became a successful and rather wealthy playwright because of his shrewd business ability, he continued acting in his plays.

 In the plays, he analyzed many aspects of his contemporary society and penetrated the essential characteristics of various types of people.

His critical insights into the nature of types like the hypocrite, the misanthrope, and the miser remain almost as urbane today as they were when written.

10. Coco Chanel- Fashion Designer

Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel (1883 –1971) was a French fashion designer and businesswoman.

The founder and namesake of the Chanel brand, she was credited with replacing the “corseted silhouette” that was dominant beforehand with a style that was simpler, less expensive, all without sacrificing elegance.

She is the only fashion designer listed on Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

Chanel extended her influence beyond couture clothing, realizing her aesthetic design in jewellery, handbags, and fragrance.

Her signature scent, Chanel No. 5, has become an iconic product, and Chanel herself designed her famed interlocked-CC monogram, which has been in use since the 1920s.
