Mohammad Amir is a left-arm fast bowler whose name would not go unmentioned by any cricket fan due to his prodigious talent. In recent times, former international cricketer Mohammad Amir has been the subject of much debate among cricket aficionados.

After serving his time in the spot-fixing scandal in the year 2010, Amir has made a successful return to professional cricket in the recent past while breaking into the world of commentary with appearances on various TV channels as well. However, despite all of this and his clear love for the game of cricket, many people still seem to have reservations about him.

1.Mohammad Amir Was Born On 13th April 1992

He was born on 13th April 1992 in Gujar Khan, Punjab Pakistan. He was the second youngest of seven children. Mohammad’s love for cricket began at a tender age with him practicing on the streets emulating his idol in cricket, Wasim Akram.

At the age of 11, Amir was spotted and invited to join Bajwa Cricket Academy set up by Asif Bajwa, who is the chairman. In 2007 while at a pace camp, he was spotted by Wasim Akram who then took the young player who was then 15 years of age under his wing.

2.He Is The Youngest To Take 5 Wickets In An Innings In ODIs

On February 6, 2010, Amir became the youngest player to take 5 wickets in a Twenty20 International match. He did this against New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland in the first Twenty20 International match of the series. He took 5 wickets for 6 runs from 4 overs, which is the best bowling figure in a T20I by any bowler to date.

3.He Scored A Century Before Making His ODI Debut

Amir scored a century before making his ODI debut. He made his First-class debut in February 2007 against Lahore Education Board. He scored his maiden century against Faisalabad in a one-day match in September 2007.

The innings of 116 runs came off just 76 balls with 11 boundaries and a six. He made his List-A debut against Faisalabad in October 2007. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in October 2009.

4.Amir Was Included In The Upcoming 2015 World Cup But Was Later Dropped

Amir was included in the 2015 World Cup squad but was dropped after he failed the fitness test at National Cricket Academy in Lahore. He was expected to be a regular member of the squad, but the selectors dropped him after he failed the fitness test.

Amir made a few comebacks in the domestic circuit but failed to impress the selectors. In February 2016, it was reported that Amir was under consideration for a place on the national team. He was included in the squad for the two-match T20I series against New Zealand in February 2016 and also played in the one-off T20I against Zimbabwe in June 2016.

5.He Has Been Part Of Many Controversies Which Ultimately Led To His Dropping From The National Team

Amir was charged with spot-fixing during the 2010 tour of England. He was subsequently banned for 5 years by the International Cricket Council. He later regretted it and admitted his mistake.

After the ban was lifted, he returned to the national side and served as an important bowler. But he was soon dropped from the team after he was found guilty of breaching the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) anti-corruption code.

6.Mohammad Amir Is Accused Of Breaching The Ban That Was Imposed On Him

He is spotted playing for Addington 1749 Cricket Club against St. Luke’s Cricket Club in the Surrey Cricket League. This is contrary to Article 6.5 of the IC Anti-Corruption Code where he breached the ban that was imposed on him. The 5-year ban was imposed on him due to allegations of spot-fixing matches.

Amir claimed that the Addington 1749 Cricket Club had confirmed that since it was a friendly match, playing would not have been in contravention of the ban that was imposed on him. The ICC investigated the incident.

7.He Was Convicted For Six Months

Amir alongside Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif was convicted on November 1st, 2011 at Southwark Crown Court. Mohammad Amir had previously pleaded guilty, to spot-fixing and conspiracy of accepting corrupt payments.

He was convicted for 6 months in Feltham Young Offenders Institution while Asif and Butt served 1 year and 2 ½ years in prison respectively. Amir and Butt appealed against their sentences. However, this was disregarded by Lord Judge, the Lord Chief Justice on November 23rd. Amir was released on 1st February 2012 after serving half of his sentence.

8.He Is One Of Only Five Bowlers To Have More Than 200 Wickets And 10-plus Averages

Amir is one of only five bowlers to have more than 200 wickets and 10-plus averages in both ODI and Test cricket. Among those five bowlers, he is the only one who has a 200+ average in both forms of the game, with 220 wickets in ODIs at 20.88 and 67 wickets in Tests at 26.38. He is also the only bowler with a 10+ average in both forms of the game.

9.He Is Currently Playing In The Big Bash League for Sydney Thunders

Amir is currently playing in the Big Bash League for Sydney Thunders. In his first game, he took 2/18 and finished with a win. At the end of the tournament, he had taken 9 wickets with an economy of 6.19. Sydney Thunders finished in third place in the league and qualified for the semi-finals.

10.Mohammad Amir Is Married To A British National

On 14th September 2014, Amir tied the knot. He is married to a British-born Pakistani National by the name of Nargis.

Amir is one of the most talented and promising bowlers for Pakistan. Despite the controversy he has gone through, he has proven that he is a talented bowler. We hope he continues to prove his critics wrong and makes a return to the national team.
