A playback singer, lyricist, composer, and actor, Muhammad Atif Aslam is most known for the songs he has written for the Pakistani and Indian cinema industries. His vocal belting style is well-known. Aslam sings mostly in Urdu and Hindi, however, he has also performed in Punjabi, Bengali, and Pashto.
Atif Aslam was born on 12 March 1983, into an Arain family in Wazirabad, Pakistan. He went to Kimberly Hall School in Lahore until 1991, when he moved to Rawalpindi and continued his studies at St. Paul’s Cambridge school in Satellite Town. In 1995, Aslam returned to Lahore, where he continued his studies at a Divisional Public school and College(DPSC) branch.
He proceeded to attend Fazaia Inter College for his HSSC from 1999 to 2001 and later went to PICS to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Computer science. Here are the top 10 outstanding facts about Atif.
1. His musical career wasn’t the plan but the fate
Growing up Atif didn’t think about a singing career and was more interested in becoming a professional cricketer. He wanted to be a fast bowler and play for Pakistan. He was about to represent his country Pakistan in the U-19 cricket team as a fast bowler.
His hidden talent for singing was first discovered by his friends, and they told about it to his parents.
2. Atif began his musical career as a vocalist
He began his music career as a vocalist in the popular Pakistani band, Jal. He teamed up with Goher Mumtaz, the founder of the band and the two of them would often perform at small events in front of small gatherings. The band got commercial success initially through the song “Aadat” in 2003.
Atif had no money to record his first single. To that, he drove local vans and managed to earn a sum of Rs 15000. It was with this amount, he recorded the song, on Comedy Nights with Kapil, revealing that it was something he feels proud of.
3. He released his first album at 21 years old
Atif started his career in a band called Jal. He left it because of disputes between him and Goher. Both wanted their brothers to be band managers. Atif went ahead and quit the band to pursue a solo career.
After separation from Jal, Aslam released his first album titled Jal Pari (ironically meaning “Mermaid”), in July 2004 at just 21 years old. The album was produced by Sarmad Abdul Ghafoor, having 11 tracks, it went on to become an instant hit.
The songs Woh Lamhey, Dil Haarey and a few others were smashing hits on both Pakistani radio stations and music channels.
4. He is the recipient of one of Pakistani’s prestigious honours
He became the youngest recipient of the prestigious Pakistan honour Tamgha – e – Imtiaz. In 2008, he received the Tamgha-e- Imtiaz (Star of Excellence), the fourth- highest civilian honour award from the Pakistani government given to civilians. It is awarded to an individual in Pakistan based on their achievements.
About receiving this civilian award, Atif said on a Pakistani talk show that it was unbelievable to have received such honour from the government of Pakistan.
5. He has an Onstage signature move
Atif has an onstage rock-star signature move famously known as “The Backward Bend”. He is fond of pulling out the signature move under his sleeve during live shows to the amusement of his fans.
6. He made his acting debut in 2011
Atif made his acting debut in the 2011 Pakistani movie Bol along with Pakistani actress Mahira Khan. The movie went on to be an instant high-grossing movie in Pakistan and got good critical reactions in India.
The film was critically acclaimed by everyone and became one of the highest-grossing Pakistani films at that time.
He commenced his Bollywood journey with the song Woh Lamhe and has sung for countless high-grossing movies.
7. Atif married his wife after seven years of courtship
Atif married his college sweetheart an educationist Sara Bharwana, a Lahore-based girl, after seven years of dating and wooing on March 29, 2013. Atif had previously met Sara at a wedding function.
They have two sons Abdul Ahad and Aryaan Aslam. Talk about being persistent and loyal.
8. Atif is academically gifted
He completed his 10th standard at the age of 14 and was the youngest amongst his classmates to do so. On average a person completes his 10th grade in 15-16 years but Atif completed it when he was 14 years old. This made him come out as the youngest among his classmates in Kimberly Hall.
9. He is the youngest amongst his brothers
He has three elder brothers. Eldest is Shahzad who is a photographer, other Shahbaz – a designer who is younger than Shahzad and also designs Atif’s clothes and then Sherza who runs Atif’s fan page and website.
10. Atif is reported to be arrogant
According to a report, Indian playback singer Kunal Ganjawala has recently expressed his anger over the presence of Pakistani musicians in Bollywood music. Expressing his love for Arijit Singh’s soulful singing, he said that the singer has shown Pakistani singers the way out. He also added that the Pakistani singers have not contributed to the Hindi film industry in any way.
Talking about veteran Pakistani singer, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Kunal said that a lot of people in India can sing on that high note. Moreover, about the much-loved singer Atif Aslam, Kunal said that Atif does not have anything except arrogance.
Atif Aslam is one of the most heard and renowned voices of India, Pakistan and the world. His voice has a kind of vibration that takes away every heart. Girls are crazy for him and boys admire him, not only his voice but his killer looks, his accent and his uniqueness.
