Top 10 Little Known Facts Ramkot Fort

Ramkot is an ancient fort in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. According to British geologist Fredrick Drew, the fort was constructed in the 12th century by a Gakhar chieftain named Toggle.

It is located on the edges of the Mangla Dam. It is said that Ramkot Fort was built on the site of an old Hindu temple. Excavations in the area have also resulted in relics being found that date back to the 5^th century.

The fort has changed many hands since its establishment, witnessing renovations and fortifications under both Muslim and Sikh rulers over the years.

Here are some little-known facts about Ramkot Fort;

1. Ramkot Fort is perched on a hill

Picturesquely located on the summit of a hill, Ramkot Fort is built over the site of an old Hindu Shiva temple.

Three sides of this hilltop are surrounded by River Jhelum (ancient 鈥淰itasta鈥�).during excavations relics of the 5th & 9th century AD have been discovered near one of the temples. In the 16th and 17th centuries AD, the Muslim rulers of Kashmir while safeguarding their boundaries built numerous Forts.

Ramkot, sitting atop the confluence of the river Jhelum & Poonch is one of them. The Sikh Maharaja of Kashmir further fortified Ramkot.

2. There is only one entrance to Ramkot Fort

There is only one entrance into the walled premises, possibly to keep the fort secured from infiltration and attacks.

This arched doorway is positioned between two watchtowers, with ramps in place inside the fort to bring artillery up to the parapets.

The interior of the fort has several buildings with arched doorways and large water tanks dug deep into the ground.

The watchtowers along the other exterior walls are also still standing tall against a backdrop of blue waters.

3. A museum was built in the Fort

The fossils of the fort remind us of its greatness. Standing on top of the fort, all the surrounding views such as the mountains, greenery, and blue water are truly amazing.

In 1992, a Museum was built by the Government of Pakistan. It contains paintings, models, and several specimens of rocks. The area is safe and attractive with its unique landscape. 

4. Ramkot has survived attacks and earthquakes

Ramkoti Fort has received a lot of attacks for a long. Apart from attacks natural disaster like an earthquake has also attacked the Fort.

However, many attacks and earthquakes have come and gone. Despite the fort being perched on the summit of the hill, it stands strong on its foundation.

5. The Fort is located beside Mangla Dam

Ramkot Fort is located beside Mangla dam, the point where River Poonch and River Jehlum. Mangla dam is one of the biggest and most famous dams in Pakistan.

The Dam is accessible from two sides one is from the Shaikh  Dadyal side and from the other side one has to take a boat from the water sports club on Mangla dam that will take you there within 30 minutes.

When the Mangla dam is full, the land route is closed. The fort is eight five kilometers from Mirpur Azad Kashmir.

6. There are many myths regarding the construction of the Fort

There are many stated myths concerning the construction of the Fort. Some historians say that Ramkot Fort was constructed over 900 years ago from a defensive point of view.

It was built over the site of an ancient Hindu Shiva temple because excavations at the fort have discovered the remains of a Hindu temple and relics.

But some believe that the Fort was constructed around the 16th- 17th century AD when Mughal emperor Akbars visit Kashmir to protect the area around old Mirpur.

The Structure of Ramkot Fort epitomizes the Muslim military architecture and is filled with war mechanisms.

The single entrance to the fort demonstrates a smart war strategy. There is a water tank at the front against the background of a building on a raised plinth.

A museum was built here in 1992 by the Government of Pakistan. It contains artistic models, paintings, and several specimens of rocks.

The fort is visited by tourists now and then. It has some activities and beautiful scenery that visitors can enjoy once they visit the area.

The activities include; Enjoyment of Boat Riding: You can take the boat from the Mangla Dam to Ramkot Fort and enjoy the scenic view of the water. You can take unique and mesmerizing photos with hills and greenery, and the blue water of River Jhelum.

Trekking: Not too long, but enjoyable trekking for thrill-seekers and advanced trekkers.Panoramic View from the fort: Once you reach the fort, you鈥檒l enjoy the panoramic, mesmerizing, and glorious views of River Jhelum.

9. Ramkot fort pathway has gun positions at the difficult bend

Any invading army would have to climb up half an hour towards the fort in open ground in the sight of the fort鈥檚 artillery peering over the top rampart.

Then if the invaders manage to get close, there are gun positions all along the track leading towards the main gate.

The main gate can only be accessed through a path that winds along a steep cliff, with water on one side and the high fort walls on the other. All this time the invaders would be peppered with gunfire from above.

This pathway also has gun positions at difficult bends, making it impossible to reach the gate in mass numbers, because there is no space to assemble in front of the main door.

10. Ramkot is visited by many pilgrims throughout the year to worship

Ramkot Fort is a place that is of utmost importance in the city and is visited by many pilgrims throughout the year, Ramkot Shrine is located on a hillock which is a major place of worship in Ayodhya city.

On the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, many pilgrims visit this place to pay their respects and worship Lord Rama with lots of cultural programs that are held on this occasion.

Chaitra Month in the Indian calendar year is celebrated with pomp and show in this city by decorating Ramkot Temple which leaves the visitors with some fascinating views. This place is among the ones which are most frequently visited by so many travelers who come to Ayodhya.

This is precise because Ramkot is the site of the ancient citadel of Ramkot that stands on an elevated ground in the western part of the city.
