Top 10 Interesting Facts about Javed Miandad

Mohammad Javed Miandad is a Pakistani cricket coach and former cricket player popular for his captaincy and batting skills. He was born in Karachi, Federal Capital Territory in June 1957.

At the beginning of Javed’s cricket career, Abdul Hafeez Kardar, 1st Pakistan Test Captain and influential administrator, spotted him and declared him ‘the find of the decade’ due to his unmatched batting skills.

Javed played cricket for Pakistan and participated in One Day Internationals (ODI) and Test matches between 1975 and 1996. He was ranked the 44th Best Cricketers of all time in ESPN Legend of Cricket.

The father of 3 has been married to Tahira Saigol since 1980.

1. Miandad Comes From a Family of Cricket Players

Javed’s father worked for Karachi Cricket Association (KCA), providing Javed with first-hand knowledge of the sport from top cricketers at an early age. His 3 brothers, Anwar Miandad, Sohail Miandad and Bashir Miandad, played first-class cricket in Pakistan.

Miandad is the uncle of Fahad Iqbal and Faisal Iqbal, a cricket player and the current coach of Bolachistan, a domestic cricket team in Pakistan.

2. He Made His First-Class Debut at the Age of 16

Javed played for Karachi Whites, his home team, in the 1973/74 season first-class matches. He had an outstanding performance of 947 runs in 12 matches at an average of 47.35. He was the star performer in the tournament and this secured him a spot on the Pakistani National Cricket Team.

3. Javed Was the Youngest Batsman to Score a Century on Debut

In 1976, Javed made his first appearance in a cricket Test game against New Zealand in Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. He scored 163 and became the second player to compose a hundred on the Pakistan Test debut after Khalid Ibadulla.

In the third test, Javed became the youngest player to score a double century (206 runs) breaking the 47-year-old record by George Headleys.

4. He Led Pakistan to Victory in the 1986 Austral-Asia Cup

Miandad is known for the 1986 historic last-ball six wins against India. The tournament was held in Sharjah and the final match attracted a capacity crowd of 20,000.

Pakistan required 4 runs to win the match and Javed hit a 6 of the final ball of the match bowled by Chetan Sharma and led this team to a win. Pakistan finished on 248-9 and India 245-7.

The Austral-Asia Cup has then been played thrice (1986,1990 and 1994) in which Pakistan has clinched the winning position for all three tournaments.

5. Miandad Was Named Wisden’s Cricketer of The Year in The 1980s

In 1982, Javed Miandad,  Richard Hadlee (New Zealand), Allan Border (Australia), Terry Alderman (Australia), and Rod March (Australia) were named Wisden’s Cricketers of the year.

These were players that were chosen to be published in Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, a cricket reference book described as the ‘bible of cricket’.

The book is published annually and has content on awards, cricket records, English Cricket, and Overseas cricket. The early Wisden editions are rare to find and sell for thousands of pounds therefore cricket followers treat this annual publication as valuable collectibles.

6. He Served as Captain of The Pakistan Team

Miandad has coached the Pakistan National Team thrice. He captained Pakistan in 34 Test matches of which 14 were won. In his first team Test as Captain, Pakistan lost the first 2 matches of the series but won the third Test finishing at 2-1.

Following the Dennis Lillee controversy of 1981, the senior players of the team refused to play with Miandad as their captain and this led to the appointment of Imran Khan as their new captain for the 1982 England Tour. The Lillee-Miandad incident was one of the most undignified incidents in Test history.

Javed led his team in winning the last edition of the limited-overs Cherry Blossom Sharjah Cup in April 2003. Pakistan beat Zimbabwe by 8 wickets with 88 balls remaining. The team’s current captain is Babar Azma, who was appointed in 2020.

7. Javed Participated in 6 World Cup Matches

Other than Sachin Tendulkar, Miandad is one of two cricket players to appear in six world cup competitions. He participated in the first six cups from 1975 to 1996 and cumulatively scored 1083 runs in 33 matches.

Despite having back problems, Javed took up the role of the lead player in Pakistan’s only World Cup triumph in 1992. The tournament that is organized by International Cricket Council (ICC) was held in Australia and New Zealand.

Javed ended the match with 437 runs at an average of 62. Pakistan played against England beating the team by 22 runs.

8. He Played His Last ODI Match in 1996

Miandad had his first ODI debut in June 1975 at Edgbaston, England. The Pakistan team played against the West Indies and lost by a whisker of 1 wicket (with 2 balls remaining). Javed competed in 233 ODI matches and had a batting average of 41.70.

In 1996, Javed played his last ODI match. It was Pakistan versus India at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru where India won by 39 runs.

9. Miandad is Among The Top 10 Most Double Centuries in Test Cricket

Javed holds the 9th position in the top 10 list of the most double centuries in test cricket. On the list, he and Younis Khan represent Team Pakistan each with 6 test double centuries from 124 and 118 matches respectively.

10. Javed is Among 6 Pakistan Players in The Hall of Fame

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Hall of Fame was launched in April 2021 as a form of celebration and honor for the achievements of the country’s great cricketers and the preservation of the history of Pakistani cricket.

There are currently 6 inductee players in the PCB Hall of Fame; Hanif Mohammad, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Zaheer Abbas, and finally Javed Miandad.

The independent voting panel of the board will be selecting 2 new members annually to add on to the current players.
