Nazia Hassan was a Pakistani singer-songwriter lawyer and social activist. Throughout her fifteen years of singing career Hassan become one of Pakistan’s most popular Celebrities.

She was referred to as the queen of South Asian pop. She is considered one of the most influential singers in the subcontinent.

Hassan is the first Pakistan and the youngest to win the film-fare award. She made her singing debut with the song Aap Jaisa Koi which appeared in the Indian film Qurbani in 1980.

She was also engaged in philanthropic activities and was appointed by UNICEF as its cultural ambassador.

Nazia was the daughter of a well-known businessman Mr. Basir Hassan and social worker Munizeh Basir.

She has two siblings a brother Zoheb and a sister Zahra both became singers. Nazia was married to Mirza Ishtiaq Baig and was blessed with a son called Arez.

Hassan accused her ex-husband of being physically abusive and cheating on her with a Pakistan actress. It was an arranged marriage.

She released her third album Young Tarang it was the first Pakistan album to be played in London by Kathy Rose and David Rose.

Hassan used her abilities to promote social causes. She worked with Jared Jabber former information minister to raise funds for children in Tharparker and Rajasthan.

She went to a larger number of schools to hand out toys to poor children and gave talks on the subject of social awareness for the privilege.

Nazia mostly worked with children, youth, and women in distress and residing in the underprivileged places of Karachi.

In Pakistan, she established the organization BAN Battle Against Narcotics and become an active member of the organization.

8. The Pakistani singer was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer

Nazia went through an operation in 1995 after being diagnosed with stage one ovarian carcinoma cancer, and she remained well for four years.

Her husband Ishtiaq Baig was quoted as saying that Nazia has been undergoing lung cancer treatment.

She declined to undergo chemotherapy because of potential hair loss but gave in after relapse. Towards the end of 1998, her left lung had a solitary deposit.

9. Nazia’s death sparked some controversy

Nazia Hassan died in August 2000 at the age of thirty-five years, the investigations carried out by the Scotland investigation team that the cause of death was pulmonary thromboembolism, deep vein thrombosis, and carcinoma on the left lung.

Hassan battled ovarian cancer but recovered miraculously after several treatments. The legend did not die of poison or any kind of foul play.

Zoheb Hassan’s brother to Nazia sparked up new controversy in an interview he believed that Ishtiaq slipped arsenic into his deceased sister’s food to slowly poison her.

Nazia Hassan tribute concert was held in Karachi, there was a classic lineup of Vital signs and Jupiters performed together on stage for the first time in seven years.

10. The Nazia Hassan Foundation was started after her death

The Nazia Hassan Foundation (NHF) was set up in 2003 as a charitable company limited by guarantee two years after the legendary singer died.

The foundation has been struck off by the UK companies house after the trustees responsible to run the charitable organization failed to comply with legal requirements due to negligence.

Records at the UK companies show that Nazia Hassan Foundation trustees failed to submit an annual report for the charity for nearly 1000 days.
