Ime Sunday Udoka, a Nigerian-American professional basketball coach and former player, was born on August 9, 1977. The basketball legend has had a spectacular career both on and off the court.
The American-Nigerian player left professional basketball in 2011 to focus on a teaching career.
He currently serves as the head coach of the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
While playing, he was a member of the Nigerian national team. He helped the Spurs defeat the Miami Heat 4-1 in the 2014 NBA Finals in his current role as an assistant coach.

1. Ime Udoka’s favorite Nigerian dish is doughy fufu with egusi soup

When he was younger, his father used to make him soup, which is prepared from dried, powdered melon seeds and green vegetables, but without a lot of spice because he doesn’t like it hot.
When he can find a good position on the road, he orders that. In Boston, he has not yet located one.
2. Ime’s first name means “patience”
His father gave him the name Ime, which is Japanese for “patience.” Mfon claimed that it accurately captured his personality. He is incredibly unfazed and stoic.

It’s been a wild ride for him in his debut season. The roster’s composition has shifted as a result of the team’s struggles with injuries and Covid-related absences.
They began the season poorly as a result, dropping a run of contests and losing a big game against the Milwaukee Bucks, the current defending champs, 117-113.

He participated in the 2006 FIBA World Championships as a member of the Nigerian men’s basketball squad.
After graduating from Portland State, Udoka established an endowment in his father’s name for an annual scholarship that is awarded to both a business student and a basketball player.
For college, he came to America, according to Udoka, who stated this on the FIBA Basketball website in 2007.
Udoka was appointed the Boston Celtics’ head coach on June 28, 2021, making him the team’s fifth head coach of African descent overall and the first in Nigeria.
7. Udoka struggled to make it in the NBA
Udoka played at Portland State University for his final collegiate season, averaging 14.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest.
He was chosen with the 39th pick in the NBDL draft by the Charleston Lowgators of the NBDL (now the G-League), and in 2004 he was called up to play with the Lakers.
After only four games, the 26-year-old was released. He returned to the NBDL after a brief absence abroad and averaged 17.1 points per game. He signed a contract with the Knicks in 2006, however, he was later released.
However, he didn’t have to go to Europe this time because he was signed by his hometown team, the Portland Trail Blazers, and he started all 75 games in 2006–07.
He had a season average of 8.4 points and made 40.6 percent of his three-point attempts, but the Blazers dismissed him in 2007 to make place for Patty Mills.
Prior to moving to Spain, where his playing career came to an end, Udoka played for two years in San Antonio, one season in Sacramento, and one more with the Spurs.
8. He is excellent at building great relationships with players
Udoka worked as an assistant coach for USA Basketball, under Gregg Popovich, the head coach of his Spurs.
His coaching role on the 2019 FIBA World Cup team helped him build relationships with Celtics players Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Marcus Smart.
9. Gabe Muoneke compared his fighting skills to Mortal Kombat
If you ask Udoka’s former teammate on the Nigerian men’s national team, Gabe Muoneke, Udoka is capable of fighting even if he probably has no desire to get into a fight.
In 2007, Muoneke wrote about an altercation that occurred following a match at the African Championships in Algiers.
In reference to the well-known, extremely brutal fighting game Mortal Kombat, Muoneke stated on Hoopshype that Udoka was taking people out like in Mortal Kombat.
10. He is an American-Nigerian
Ime was born in Portland, Oregon. He is of American and Nigerian descent. His mother was an American from Illinois, while his father, Vitali Udoka is of Akwa Ibom origin from Nigeria.
The footballer was 34 years old when his mother sadly died away in 2011. He was brought up with Mfon, his lone sibling.
The once active athlete is thought to be worth roughly $11.5 million. His career as a professional basketball player has brought in a sizable sum of money.
He also receives a large salary from his present position as the Boston Celtics coach.
