Nigerian singer Tiwatope Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage was born on February 5, 1980. She was born in Isale Eko and moved to London when she was 11 years old to pursue her secondary education.

Savage joined Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2009 after finishing his studies at Berklee College of Music and competing on The X Factor UK.

Savage relocated back to Nigeria and signed with Mavin Records in 2012 after being motivated by the expansion of the Nigerian music industry. She appeared on the 2012 compilation album Solar Plexus from the label.

Savage was the first woman to win Best African Act at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards in November of that year.

Afrobeats, R&B, pop, hip-hop, and English are all present in Savage’s dual-language singing in Yoruba and English. Savage has achieved a number of things thanks to her efforts in the Nigerian music scene.

1. Her family relocated to London when she was 11 years old

Tiwatope Savage was born in Isale Eko, Lagos State, Nigeria. When she was 11 years old, her family moved to London.

This was probably a significant departure from Lagos and required her and her family to make significant lifestyle adjustments.

2. She signed a publishing contract with Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2009

Savage entered into a publishing agreement with Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2009. She was able to write for Babyface, Kat Deluna, Fantasia, Monica, and M.A. thanks to the agreement.

For her contribution to Monica’s soul-tinged ballad Catch Me, she has been given composition credit.

In 2010, the American music artist received a Grammy nomination for Collard Greens & Cornbread, which she co-wrote with Fantasia.

3. She is the first Nigerian artist to be signed by  Roc Nation

Jay-Z established the entertainment company Roc Nation in 2008. The business has locations in London, Los Angeles, and New York.

It includes a clothing line, media relations, publishing, school, philanthropy, an exhibition network, and more.

It also includes a talent agency, sports agency, record label, management, TV & film, and record label.

The media reported in June 2016 that Savage had joined forces with Roc Nation for management and publishing.

 She made it official by sharing the news on her Instagram account on July 29, 2016, becoming the first artist from Nigeria to sign with the company.

4. When she was 16 years old, she performed as George Michael’s backup singer

At the age of 16, Tiwa sang backing vocals for the English singer George Michael.

Before his untimely death, George Michael was regarded as one of the most popular stars of his generation.

As he grew older, people continued to hold him in high regard as a person deserving of respect.

She has also provided vocals for artists like Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Blu Cantrell, Emma Bunton, Kelly Clarkson, Andrea Bocelli, and Ms. Dynamite.

5. Tiwa is the 1st African Female PEPSI ambassador and a SONY writer

Tiwa Savage of Mavin Records and Wizkid of EME made history when they were formally introduced as Pepsi ambassadors, one of the most popular soft beverages in Nigeria.

Tiwa served as co-host of the Pepsi-sponsored second season of the reality TV program Nigerian Idol.

6. She has received numerous nominations for awards and has won a sizable number of them

In 2014, Tiwa Savage became the first female musician from Nigeria to be nominated for a BET award.

She received nominations for Best Album of the Year at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and Best R&B/Pop Album at The Headies for her first studio album, Once Upon a Time.

Her second studio album R.E.D was nominated for Best Album at the 2016 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. 

At the Channel O music awards that year, she also won the prize for best female. She received an MTV European Music Award in 2018.

Savage created history in 2018 by being the first woman to win the Best African Act award at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

7. She has two studio albums

On July 3, 2013, her first studio album, Once Upon a Time, was made available.

There were seven singles that were released in favor of it: Kele Kele Love, Love Me (3x), Without My Heart, life Wa Gbona, Folarin, Olorun Mi, and Eminado.

The album was nominated for two awards: Best R&B/Pop Album at The Headies 2014 and Best Album of the Year at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

R.E.D, which stands for romance, expression, and dance, is the title of Savage’s second studio album, which was released on December 19, 2015. The tracks My Darlin and Standing Ovation helped to promote the album.

At the 2016 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, R.E.D received a nomination for Best Album.

On December 21, 2015, MTN Music released the album as a free digital streaming option. It became the most-streamed album on the music service within 24 hours of its debut. I-am-Red.com was used to advertise the album.

8. Sadly, her marriage ended somewhat bitterly

Tunji “Tee Billz” Balogun was the husband of Tiwa Savage. The pair wed in a traditional ceremony at the Ark in Lekki on November 23, 2013.

They had their first baby in 2015. Balogun accused his wife of adultery and his mother-in-law of witchcraft on April 28, 2016.

Savage went into great detail about her husband’s lengthy social media writings about their marriage and refuted her husband’s allegations of infidelity.

She charged him with financial irresponsibility, drug abuse, and abandonment and claimed their marriage was finished.

9. She was blackmailed with a leaked sex tape of her and her boyfriend

On October 8, 2021, Savage revealed in an interview that someone was attempting to extort and blackmail her with a leaked sex tape of her and her boyfriend.

She later issued a cryptic post on her Instagram page, telling people to forget what they saw and to “Change that sh*t to the game and never speak on it again.”

10. She has a degree in accounting

After receiving her accounting degree from the University of Kent, Savage began working for The Royal Bank of Scotland.
