The St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral. It is located in the French city of Nice. The construction started in 1903 and was completed in 1912.

The cathedral is a property of the Russian federation. It is recognized as a National Monument of France.

During the second half of the 19th century, the French Riviera, particularly Nice, became a regular place of residence for the Russian Imperial family. The Russian colony settled there in a perennial way.

This led to the construction of an orthodox place of worship to serve the population. The cathedral is the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in western Europe.

1. This Stunning Ecclesiastical Building is not the First Russian Church in Nice

The first church was built in 1856. It was initiated by Empress Alexander. Ultimately, the church was built on Longchamp street in Nice.

By then the Russian community in Nice was already growing and the need for a new place to congregate arose. The first church was deemed too small and deteriorated. The building of a cathedral started just a few steps from the church.

2. The Construction of the Cathedral took almost a Decade to completion

The first stone was laid in 1903. However, the project was very complex. Several leaders and contractors were changed before the completion of the cathedral. This is one of the reasons that slowed down the construction.

Between 1904 and 1905, the construction was slowed down by the Russo-Japanese War. The collapse of Russian assets. The first revolutionary crisis happened in October 1905.

St Nicholas of Nice was inspired by the architecture of the cathedral of St Basil the Blessed in Moscow. It evokes the very beautiful Russian Cathedral of St Saviour on the Blood.

6. The Structure was Designed in the Old Russian Way

The cathedral is big. It was constructed in the Old Russian style. However, it proves its modernity

The cathedral is built in the form of a Greek Cross. It has five domes symbolizing Christ and four Evangelists.

It has two twin towers with a bell tower in the centre. The cathedral is built from various materials with several types of textures and colours: stone, brick, ceramics, etc.

The main body of the temple was built on a square base, over which hang two rows of “kokoshniks” with drums lying on them. The windows are inserted into a narrow rectangular frame bath in light.

The central space is also adorned with three small windows on each side. Richly decorated with majolica. The drums themselves are crowned with domes covered with lacquered tiles.

7. Symbolism of the iconostasis in the Cathedral

The iconostasis was made in Russia in the workshops of Khlebnikov. It is made of wood covered with bronze and gilded copper sheets with chased patterns.

On the vaults of the altar apse, the image of the Mother of God “The Sign” is depicted, surrounded by an angelic army. The upper part of the iconostasis is crowned with a cross. The images on the vaults and columns are made in delicate pale blue, yellow and purple colours.

In the ornaments, there is a mixture of lilies, and flower garlands with double-headed eagles. These bold combinations deeply emphasize the era of the creation of the cathedral – the 20th century.

8. The Cathedral was Named and Concentrated in Honour of the Heavenly Patron of the Ruling Autocrat

The Cathedral of St. Nicholas was traditionally named and Concentrated to honour Emperor Nicholas II. The emperor paid almost half of the cost of the work. He also provided the temple with a vast plot of land.

Moreover, the cathedral cross was also created in memory of the martyred on July 17, 1918, the builder of the cathedral, Emperor Nicholas, his wife and children. Their patron saints are depicted on the cross.
