The park was established by the Lagos state government as part of a drive to create a healthier and more environmentally friendly state. It was named after Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, a previous military governor, and was commissioned in 2014 by former governor Babatunde Fashola.

In 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, almost everything globally was closed down. The Lagos State Government closed down all parks to contain the spread of the virus in March. However, on 6 September 2020, the  Lagos State Government announced the reopening of two of its recreational parks for public use but stated that visitors must comply with the existing COVID-19 protocols.

Johnson Jakande Tinubu Park is a public park in Lagos’s Ikeja neighborhood. The park was dedicated by the Lagos State Governor in December 2017.
