San Antonio Spurs To Swap Victor Wembanyama For Paolo Banchero
The NBA Draft lottery gave the order in which teams would get their pick in the upcoming draft set for June 22, 2023, and the Spurs are the happiest franchise amongst all of them, why?
The San Antonio Spurs were the lucky team to get the first overall pick in the draft and that means they will be going for the best young talent in the game right now.
You have probably heard about Victor Wembanyama and if at all you haven’t, you probably live under a rock.
On a lighter note though, Victor Wembanyama is the best young talent going to the NBA and he is projected to be the first overall pick this upcoming draft.
Wembanyama stands at a staggering 7 ‘4” and possesses an 8-foot wingspan which makes him a lethal player on the court both defensively and offensively.
His in-court prowess and massive talents make him the holy grail in the game which makes every team salivate on the idea of getting him to their roster.
The San Antonio Spurs look like they have the upper hand at the moment but everybody wants to know what could be and looking at all the possibilities we are left wondering, what if the Spurs trade their first pick?
In a recent NBA trade scenario mockup by ESPN, the Spurs could likely fold and trade their rights to pick first for the prospect of what the Orlando Magic can offer.
To get Wembanyama, Orlando Magic would have to part ways with 2023 Rookie of the Year and 2022 number 1 pick Paolo Banchero, 2021 number 5 pick Rashon Suggs and the number 6 and 11 draft slots.
That would mean four top-11 selections over three years just to get Wembanyama, sounds like a win for the Spurs but this just shows why Wemby is valued extremely highly.
Landing Wembanyama on your roster would be the perfect thing to have on your team especially if you are Orlando Magic.
But the idea of trading away fundamental players of a team is what makes the deal less alluring.
It is also good to note that although Wembanyama is expected to be up and running quickly, he hasn’t played a single game in the NBA and nobody knows how he will perform once there.
Putting all your eggs in one basket can be compared to Orlando Magic sending four top talents to San Antonio Spurs for one generational player.
Banchero has had a spectacular rookie season averaging 20 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 2022-2023 to win the Rookie of the Year.
Going to San Antonio he would be a good fit for the team and he might just be the needed piece for San Antonio Spurs to make its revival.
Victor averaged 21.6 points per game with 10.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 3.1 blocks the entire season and would also be a lethal force in Orlando Magic to lead them to glory.
Both teams however have faith in their stars and it is so hard to come by these days the chance to get the first overall pick and with Spurs having that power now, I doubt they are going to let it go.
We would just have to wait and see what the Spurs do come June 22, 2023, but getting a once-in-a-lifetime talent like Victor Wembanyama is something they wouldn’t want to lose.
Let us wait and watch how things unravel.
