British Prime Minister Pushing The UK As Global Center For Technology

Speaking on Wednesday 7th June 2023, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the world鈥檚 first artificial intelligence summit. The summit will be hosted in the UK in the autumn of 2023 and will be focused on the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

PM Rishi Sunak, who is visiting the United States on a 2-day trip, is due to meet POTUS Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday. In the meeting, Sunak is expected to discuss the Russia-Ukraine conflict as well as discuss US鈥檚 involvement in the upcoming summit.

Leading businesses and “like-minded countries” will have the opportunity to debate ways to reduce the risks associated with the rapidly advancing technology at the summit. It is not meant to compete with the AI debates that took place at the G7 summit in Japan last month.

It will instead run alongside the summit taking into consideration any progress made. According to UK authorities, the purpose of the meeting in London is for businesses (AI developers) and governments to begin talking about the potential need for safeguards as far as AI is concerned.

PM Sunak Defends His Country鈥檚 Ability To Lead AI Regulation Efforts

Speaking to Uk鈥檚 TalkTV during the announcement on Wednesday, the Prime Minister rejected any notion that his country was not ready for the role due to its exit from the European Union (Brexit).

He was quick to remind all of his achievements as the chancellor of the exchequer (the UK鈥檚 finance minister) which served as evidence that he was at the forefront of the many issues AI posits to the world.

Speaking to the BBC from Washington, Sunak also enforced his comments on why the UK is the best fit for the role of a global center for technology.

He said, 鈥淚 believe the UK is well-placed to lead and shape the conversation on this because we are very strong when it comes to AI and it鈥檚 a topic that I, in particular, started talking about two years ago, to make sure that we are prepared.鈥�

鈥淭his mid-size country is the only country other than the US that has brought together the three leading companies with large language models,鈥� the prime minister said.
