 Travelers arriving at Portuguese airports have been advised to be cautious when choosing a taxi, as the Mobility and Transport Authority has reported an increase in taxi irregularities.

These irregularities primarily involve inflated fares. Passengers have reported being charged significantly more than the metered rate, or encountering drivers who refuse to use the taximeter altogether.

The AMT, responsible for regulating transportation in Portugal, expressed concern about this trend. From communication published on its the Authority has received 23 reports of alleged fraud in passenger taxi transport so far. The fraud is in the form of charging without using the taximeter, and consequently, higher prices than the usual rates.

Another instance of irregularity is illegal soliciting of clients at airports, whereby taxi operators directly contact customers. The requirement is that such services are contracted through prior subscription and reservation on the electronic platform.

The AMT is working with airport authorities to address the issue. Travelers who experience irregularities can report them directly to the AMT for further investigation. AMT has also urged taxi operator associations to sensitize their members on their obligation to comply with the operating rules.
