Portugal continues to rank high as a travel destination with some of the best beaches in Europe. BookRetreats, a travel website, recently ranked European beaches for summer 2024, and Portugal snagged six coveted spots! This was after an evaluation of beaches in 16 European travel destinations.

Factors such as popularity, accessibility, safety, weather conditions and water quality were considered. The website then revealed a list of the 25 best beaches in Europe for the summer of 2024.  La Concha Beach in Spain took first place. Six of Portugal’s beaches featured in the list. Here is a breakdown;

Praia da Falésia-2nd

Claiming second place, Falesia beach is one of the most stunning, boasting a long stretch of golden sand along the southern coast of Portugal. It sits between the resort towns of Albufeira and Olhos d’Agua. Known for the dramatic red, white and yellow cliffs, its beauty is a major draw to visitors.

Praia da Marinha -10th

Located near Lagoa in the Algarve region of Portugal, Marinha beach is popular for its beautiful scenery, clear blue waters, golden sand and dramatic cliffs. It is quite busy in summer months, as visitors enjoy swimming, sunbathing and water sports. There are restaurants and cafes near the beach too.

Praia da Ponta da Calheta-15th

This beach is located on the western tip of the island of Porto Santo in the Madeira archipelago. A highlight is the stunning views it offers of the Desertas Islands. It has beautiful scenery and clear blue waters, plus a few restaurants nearby and a car park.

Praia da Armona- 17th

Situated off the coast of the city of Olhao, Armona beach offers quite a relaxed and natural atmosphere. It sits on an island, (Ilha da Armona), which is car-free. Stretching for several kilometers along the island’s southern coast, the beach offers enough space for relaxation. Its clear waters are perfect for water activities, including swimming. To access it, one has to take a ferry from Olhao.

Praia do Garajau-20th          

Garajau beach sits on the south coast of Madeira Island. Nestled within the Garajau Partial Natural Reserve, it boasts a stunning backdrop. Divers and snorkelers flock here to witness the rich underwater world, including colorful fish, large groupers, and even giant manta rays

Praia da Terra Estreita-23rd

This beach is a hidden gem on the Ilha de Tavira, as it is relatively unknown. It boasts stunning scenery, including clear blue waters, golden sand and dramatic cliffs. Its calm, shallow waters are ideal for children to swim in.
