Portugal faced a severe bad spell of weather on Thursday March 28th, 2024. Two extreme wind phenomena were recorded in the country around the Tagus Basin. According to Civil Protection authorities, over 700 incidents have been reported between then and today, due to the storm.
Most of these have been reported in the Greater Lisbon area. José Costa, service commander at the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) reported that the most complicated incidences occurred on Thursday afternoon. Between 00.00 hours and 12.00 noon today, 58 of the 716 incidences were recorded. 225 of the incidents occurred in Greater Lisbon, and 72 in Algarve.
The incidents include flooding, especially in low-lying areas, and fallen trees blocking roads and damaging property.
Currently, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) is looking into the severe wind phenomenon that occurred in the Tagus basin, with initial reports suggesting a potential tornado. The latter is yet to be officially confirmed pending a conclusive investigation.
While the weather has improved as of today, 30th March, residents and those visiting the affected regions are advised to remain cautious of any potential hazards caused by floods and fallen trees. The rain is expected to stop soon and IPMA is yet to issue any major weather warnings for Portugal. IPMA has however indicated that the rains may continue until Easter Sunday.
