Wandsworth in South London and Haringey in North London will host the London Borough of Culture in 2025 and 2027 consecutively. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan through his official X (formerly Twitter) page, made this announcement on Monday, 11th March 2024. 

The mayor also announced the southwest London borough would receive 拢1.35 million to help it prepare in the preparations for a year of artistic endeavour in 2025. Khan added that the award has become 鈥渁鈥痗ornerstone in the capital鈥檚 calendar鈥�, saying, 鈥淲e鈥檝e seen the difference that it鈥檚 made in winning boroughs Waltham Forest, Brent, Lewisham and Croydon, and I鈥檓 excited to see Wandsworth and Haringey鈥檚 fantastic ideas come to life as we build a better London for all.鈥�

Wandsworth council leader Simon Hogg said the area, which includes Battersea, Tooting and Balham, represented 鈥渢he best of modern Britain鈥�. He said, 鈥淎s a result of the Mayor鈥檚 funding, we鈥檙e going to deliver a year to remember 鈥� using the power of culture to transform lives, connect people and improve wellbeing, never more important than now.鈥�

Haringey鈥檚 plans include a celebration of the area鈥檚 working-class history and will include a free family festival and a fashion and design show. Council leader Peray Ahmet said their bid focused on the area鈥檚 鈥渉eritage as a rebel borough鈥� and thanked Spurs, whose stadium is in the borough, for their 鈥渋mmense support鈥�. She said, 鈥淲e look forward to welcoming London and the world to Haringey and delivering a year of culture which resonates with all of our diverse communities.鈥�

They follow previous winners including Waltham Forest, Lewisham and Croydon in hosting the year-long events. According to Yahoo.uk, three other boroughs, Barnet, Merton and Greenwich were named the Mayor鈥檚 Cultural Impact Award winners and will receive up to 拢200,000 to deliver smaller projects.
