In a revival heralded by travel experts, Istanbul’s historic Sirkeci Station-Kazlıcesme line has been named one of . The famed but long-neglected terminus of the legendary Orient Express is experiencing a renaissance thanks to a newly opened 8.3 km (5.2 mile) light rail line along the Bosphorus strait to the Kazlıcesme neighborhood.
Rebirth of an Istanbul Landmark
Sirkeci Station, opened in 1888, was the iconic final destination for the Orient Express’ fabled transcontinental journey from Â鶹APP. But it fell into disuse after long-distance services ceased in 2013, overshadowed by the modern Marmaray rail tunnel beneath the Bosphorus.
Now, this landmark of 19th century rail travel is back on the tourist map. As Lonely Planet reports, “There’s life in old Sirkeci yet…The opening of the new light rail service to KazlıçeÅŸme restores trains to the original train line.”
A Seafront Journey Steeped in History
The new Sirkeci-KazlıçeÅŸme line hugs the shoreline, allowing passengers to soak in views of the Bosphorus, Golden Horn and old city on Europe’s only transcontinental rail route. Stops like Kumkapı offer a chance to “hop off for a seafood meal,” making it ideal for visitors craving an immersive Istanbul experience.
“This line might even be an excuse to hop on the train,” Lonely Planet declares, billing it as a rare opportunity for “nostalgic travellers” to experience the evocative atmosphere of one of Europe’s oldest terminals.
Blending Transit, Green Space and Heritage
But the revival of Sirkeci Station is about more than romantic train journeys. The million project created 122,550 square meters of parks and plazas, 7.3 km of walking/biking paths, and thoughtful restorations of heritage stations like Yedikule, Kocamustafapasa and Yenikapı.
“By making Istanbul’s most valuable areas available to citizens, we are making significant contributions to social life,” said Transport Minister Abdulkadir UraloÄŸlu. He called the pedestrian-friendly rail corridor “one of the most important examples” of Turkey’s vision for modern, sustainable transit interwoven with urban green spaces.
Carried by a Surging Wave of New Istanbul Rail Projects
The reborn Sirkeci-Kazlıcesme route rides the crest of an unprecedented rail construction boom in Turkey’s largest city. Istanbul’s transit landscape is also being reshaped by the Marmaray tunnel, modern tram lines, and intra-city high speed rail.
With over 800,000 passengers embracing the new Sirkeci seafront service already, this historic station has clearly reclaimed its century-old role as an Istanbul travel centerpiece – only this time blending modern amenities with a storied past. As summer dawns, Lonely Planet is sounding the call for visitors to experience Sirkeci’s dynamic revival.
