​Istanbul has been unanimously selected to host the 2027 European Games, a major multi-sport event. The games will take place in 2027 across various venues in the Turkish metropolis. ​ This is viewed as a stepping stone in Istanbul’s long-coveted ambition to bring the Olympics to the city in 2036. 

Historic Opportunity on Europe’s Biggest Stage

The decision, announced on March 2024 by the European Olympic Committees (EOC), marks a historic milestone for Istanbul. The Turkish cultural capital beat out other prospective bidders like Spain and Portugal to secure the right to host the fourth edition of the European Games.

“Istanbul and Turkey have long been good friends of international sport,” EOC President Spyros Capralos stated. “We know it will be the perfect place for Europe’s best athletes to shine in 2027.”

No New Venues Required

In a major cost-saving measure, the EOC confirmed that no new competition venues will need to be constructed for the games. Instead, Istanbul’s world-class existing facilities will be utilized, with funds allocated for renovations and upgrades where necessary.

Gateway to the 2036 Olympic Dream

The hosting rights are widely viewed as a strategic pathway in Istanbul’s relentless pursuit of bringing the Olympic Games to the city for the first time. Istanbul finished as the runner-up in the bidding for the 2020 Olympics, ultimately awarded to Tokyo.

“Our first and greatest step toward our goal of becoming an Olympic city will be the time frame when Istanbul will host the 2027 European Games.” stated Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.

Unanimous Vote of Confidence 

The unanimous vote by EOC  rubber-stamps Istanbul’s capability to host  premier international sporting events. The decision will be formally ratified at the EOC’s general assembly in June.

The 2027 European Games are expected to feature nearly 7,000 athletes. Countries will compete in 29 sports, including track and field, boxing, and table tennis. Gymnastics and swimming that had been recently dropped are slated for a comeback.
