Is the ‘Wednesday’ actress Jenna Ortega being bullied again?

Celebrities frequently come under fire from both their supporters and haters and Jenna Ortega is no exception. The 20 year old actress, famously known from the Netflix’s popular Addams Family spinoff, where she played the role of Wednesday Addams, is being mocked publicly by Hollywood writers who are taking part in the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike in Hollywood.

These Hollywood writers who are on strike are making fun of her after she earlier claimed in March 2023 that she was “almost unprofessional” on the set of the program because she made a few changes to the script to suit the character she was portraying. She made the show ten times better and I can’t imagine the show without her. She made Wednesday Addams and she is Wednesday Addams.

Ortega claimed that everything that her character, the original Goth girl, did in the script “did not make sense at all for her character.” I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down more on a set in a way that I had to on Wednesday,” she remarked while speaking on the podcast series, Armchair Expert. Nick Adams, a writer for BoJack Horseman, tweeted earlier this week that Jenna Ortega “better be back from NY for her afternoon shift on the picket line.”

It’s crazy what this age of social media can do to an individual, especially celebrities and mockery hits harder when the criticism comes from your own peers. This cruel episode has ignited a contentious discussion regarding the line between the boundaries between bullying and constructive criticism in the entertainment industry.

Many have not been shy to call out the writers for bullying the 20 year-old for having criticized Wednesday actor Jenna Ortega for her remarks about altering the script for the popular Netflix series.

This week, when they went on strike, the writers aimed to improve their union contract on a number of issues in light of the changing nature of the industry as it increasingly moves toward a streaming distribution model.

I know she made divisive remarks and how she heavily contributed to the show, Wednesday but she help improved the script. She did not deserve the hate she got even from Producer Steven S. DeKnight. He heavily criticized Ortega’s words at the time, calling the actress “toxic” and “entitled.” As if that was not enough, she is now being straight up bullied by these writers on Twitter and with other posters while on strike in Hollywood.

The whole situation of the striking writers making fun of a famous, female, young actor is not truly a good look for them. If anything, it has truly complicated the problem. I agree that every creative and non-creative works needs a critique, but it’s crucial to take into account the elements such as the people that are involved, their age and most importantly how the critique effects someone’s mental health and career.

The incident has also brought attention to the necessity for the need of more respectful and constructive criticism that is not masked as bullying. Critique should be done through proper communication as well as treating everyone with respect and dignity, regardless of their age. I just hopped they all approached the whole situation with more empathy and compassion.
