“Pause Giant AI Experiments,” Tech Leaders Advise

On 14th March 2023, OpenAI launched ChatGPT-4, a more advanced successor to the infamous AI chatbot ChatGPT which used ChatGPT-3. This launch sparked a race among tech giants as they seek to win the AI wars.

As much as this race guarantees more advanced products for the consumer, it is clear that there is more at stake than can be seen at the moment and tech leaders seem to be very aware of this fact. On 29th March 2023, a range of tech leaders, including Elon Musk who was initially an OpenAI investor, called for a pause in the development of more powerful AI systems.

This was done through an open letter signed by over 1,000 people including Twitter’s Elon Musk, Apple’s Steve Wozniak, researchers at Alphabet’s DeepMind, Stability AI chief Emad Mostaque (prominent OpenAI critic), and other AI leaders. The letter was in response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 and it seeks to ensure enough time is allowed to determine whether these AI systems are indeed safe.

According to Aljazeera, the open letter was titled; “Pause Giant AI Experiments”. It read, “AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity,” and “Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.”

The letter also addressed a suggestion by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. In a previously published blog, Sam Altman claimed, “at some point, it may be important to get an independent review before starting to train future systems”.

On this, the letter read, “We agree. That point is now.” The letter went on to call for a hiatus on all AI development in a statement that said, “Therefore, we call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least six months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.”

Through the letter, these tech leaders also called on government bodies to take action and implement an embargo if companies fail to agree to these requests. While the letter did advise for the government’s intervention, some bodies are already ahead of the curve in working to mitigate the risk posed by AI tools.

On Wednesday 29th March 2023, the U.K. government published a white paper where they highlighted some recommendations directed at the AI industry. According to CNBC, the white paper is to be put forward to Parliament. The Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT) will outline five principles that companies developing AI systems have to follow.

These principles are; safety, security, and robustness; transparency and explainability; fairness; accountability and governance; and contestability and redress as per CNBC.
