The annual competition is organized by the Association of Historic Settlements in Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia in collaboration with the Czech Ministry of Regional Development. This award honors towns and cities that have preserved and continually renewed their cultural and architectural heritage.

In November 2023, 沤atec and the surrounding hop-growing landscape received the certificate of inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, after 15 years of waiting. The Historical Town of the Year award adds to 沤atec鈥檚 reputation as a top tourist destination.
