Barcelona has been busy lately with the ongoing Catalan elections, but commuters were thrown a major curveball when the city’s vital Rodalies train network was sabotaged by copper cable thieves.
A brazen heist in Montcada i Reixac, just northeast of Barcelona, left the commuter rail system severely disrupted since Sunday morning.
The theft paralyzed large sections of the network, preventing many train lines from reaching Barcelona itself.
The ripple effects also tangled regional rail services across Catalonia in the snarl. A true transit nightmare that has made navigating the region a dizzying challenge.
The R1 line linking Barcelona to the northern beach towns could only operate between the capital and Badalona, forcing passengers to transfer to the metro. The R2 southbound route terminated at Bellvitge, severing connections to the airport and beyond.
The cross-regional R4 artery was sliced into three segments, its crucial link between Vilafranca del Penedès, Barcelona, and Manresa disintegrating into yawning service gaps.
Likewise, the R3 lost its through-route from Montcada Ripollet to Vic and the Pyrenees.
As for the R7 and R8 lines, road transport has been drafted as a stop-gap replacement for rail.
However, the disruptions remain a major hindrance for voters trying to reach polling stations and tourists exploring Catalonia’s charms.
In a bid to ease the crunch, Barcelona’s TMB metro operator has massively ramped up service, adding dozens of extra trains during morning rush hours to boost capacity to the maximum 167 trains.
A swift but sadly necessary response as repair crews scramble to restore the crippled rail lines.
All for what? Likely just a few strips of valueless scrap copper sold for pennies by mindless thieves.
An outrageous act of petty crime has strangled Barcelona’s arteries and sown chaos for the city’s commuters.
But until the severed cables are replaced, Barcelona commuters should prepare for severe delays as detours and reduced schedules remain in effect across the Rodalies network.
