Lake Rotomahana is located approximately twenty Kilometres to the southeast of Rotorua, in northern New Zealand. It is situated southwest of the volcano Mount Tarawera.

The lake is remotely situated on the famous old site of pink and white terraces.  It covers an area of eight hundred hectares. The Northern shore of the lake lies to the lower Lake Tarawera separated by about seven hundred meters of terrain.

The name of the is translated as “warm Lake” by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage of New Zealand. There is limited access to the lake because most of the surrounding is privately owned land.

The lake is accessed via a gravel road that leads through a pine forest from the Waimungu Valley Loop Road. It is of high scenic quality and fishing is an excellent activity at the lake.

1. Its Geography was Altered by the Eruption of Mount Tarawera

The natural geography of Lake Rotomahana was altered by the volcano eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. The eruption was experienced on the 10th of June in 1886 causing an earthquake, explosions, and lightning that were heard more than five hundred kilometers away.

The eruption is responsible for the destruction of the famed pink and white terraces which were the most famous tourist attractions in New Zealand. As a result of the eruption, the white and pink terraces were buried approximately sixty meters below the lake’s surface.

The terraces significantly expanded and filled the newly formed rift valley.

The eruption was the largest and deadliest in the entire European history of New Zealand. It is also believed to have led to the death of about one hundred and fifty people from the nearby village.

2. It Hosted the Eighth Wonder of the World

Lake Rotomahana hosted the long-lost eighth wonder of the world. The eighth wonder was the pink and white terraces that were naturally occurring in lake Rotomahana.

The fascinating terraces were formed as a result of upwelling geothermal springs which contained a cocktail of silica-saturated with neutral pH chloride water.

They were said to contain the largest silica sinter deposits in the entire world. The terraces covered an area of around one thousand two hundred meters. They were the main tourist attraction in New Zealand in the 1800s.

3. It was Originally a Small Lake

Lake Rotomahana was originally a slightly small lake before it was geographically altered. The effects of the hydrothermal eruption triggered an increase in the size of the lake from its original size.

The blast caused the original size of the lake to increase 20 times. As a result of the eruption, the neighboring lake Rotomakariri combined with Rotomahana forming the region’s deepest lake.

4. The Lake is a wildlife Refuge

The high scenic lake is a major refuge for the wildlife in the country. The lake is inhabited by a healthy population of black swans. The hurting of the birds is also prohibited.

It is also an excellent environment for fishing due to its remoteness. It contains several rainbow trout fish which way 1.5kgs on average.       

5. It was Deserted After Destruction of the White and Pink Terraces

The lake was a major tourist attraction in the 1800s to view the sensational terraces. However, after the white and pink terraces were altered by the eruption tourist activities were limited. T

ourism returned to the lake in 1900. This was when Waimangu Geyser began to erupt in the volcanic valley which was created by the eruption.

6. Lake Rotomahana is one of the most Geothermally Active Lake

The large silica deposits formed bathing pools in the hot spring waters from geothermal systems around the lake. The lake has a lot of thermal activities that surround it to date. Steaming cliffs are currently observed at the shores of Lake Rotomahana.

The base of Mount Tarawera, at the Lake, is steeped in the history and formation of the lake from geothermal features like colorful steaming cliffs, fumaroles’ and geysers.

From the statistics, Lake Rotomahana is one of the most geothermally active lakes with several hot springs in the western basin.

7. It Hosts the Phenomenon Patiti Island

The sensational Patiti Island is located east of Rotomahana and south of Ngawhiro. It was formally known as Rangipakaru Hill before the eruption. It is the largest Island on the lake. 

According to the research, the island is confirmed to be the closest surviving pre-surviving feature on the lake. There are also measures to ensure that the island is free from pests.

8. It is the Most Recently Formed Larger Natural Lake in New Zealand

The naturally occurring lake was formed in 1886. It is the most recently formed large natural lake in New Zealand as a result of a mountain eruption.

it is also the deepest lake in the region. Before the eruption, the current lake basin had only two small lakes that were present.

9. The Sunken Totara Forest is a Semi-Mythical Feature of Lake Rotomahana

The sunken Totara Forest is one of the forgotten lake features. The information about the forest is a myth with contradicting stories. From the myth, the Totara trees existed before the eruption of Mount Tarawera.

The forest is said to have sunken under the lake due to the eruption. However, according to the Scuba team which dove into the lake in 2016, there was no evidence of sunken forest and trees.
