Steven Funaki Adams is a world-class athlete from New Zealand who currently plays basketball for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the NBA. He was born on 20th July 1993  in Rotorua, New Zealand.

Adams was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 12th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft. He was the Thunder’s primary starting Centre for six consecutive seasons. In November 2020, after seven years in Oklahoma City, Adams was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. In August 2021, he was dealt to the Grizzlies.  

He enjoys playing video games and is a huge fan of comics and Japanese anime. He is generally well respected around the league for his sense of humor, down-to-earth personality, and humility.  In 2018, he released an autobiography about Steven Adams which is called My Life, My Fight.

4. Steven is half Tongan though he strongly identifies with Maori Culture

Maori culture is the customs, cultural practices, and beliefs of the indigenous Māori people of New Zealand. It originated from and is still part of, Eastern Polynesian culture. Māori culture forms a distinctive part of New Zealand culture and, due to a large diaspora and the incorporation of Māori motifs into popular culture, it is found throughout the world. 5. He is the youngest of 18 sibling

Sid Adams has 18 siblings including him. They are Valerie Adams, Sid Adams Jr, Ralph Adams, Warren Adams, and Lisa Adams. Valerie Adams is currently a retired New Zealand shot putter and four-time World Champion. Lisa is also a Paralympic F37 shot putter and F38 discus thrower in New Zealand.

 Valerie Adam is a retired New Zealand shot putter and a four-time World champion, four-time World Indoor champion, two-time Olympic, three-time Commonwealth Games champion, and twice IAAF Continental Cup winner. She has a personal best throw of 21.24 meters outdoors and 20.54 m indoors.

7. He released a comic, ‘Kiwi Legend’

In a video posted on the Oklahoma City Thunder Twitter page, comic artist Corey Lewis Reyyy showcased his creation called ‘Kiwi Legend’,. It was released on his 25th birthday and was sold at the 2018 Comic-Con in San Diego. The comic was about Adams.

 He missed the opening game of the 2017 NBA season (not involving the Thunder) because he was watching cartoons.

Adams’ NBA career plan started at a Christmas family barbecue in Rotorua when he was 13 years old. At Viv’s place, Warren who was up from Wellington asked if he was still playing basketball.

Warren called Viv around March 2008 to follow up on his question about his basketball future. Was he interested in pursuing it? Viv honestly didn’t know, but in her mind him playing basketball was still better than me playing Xbox. She told Warren if he was willing to look after him in Wellington, he should come and fetch Adam.

10. He was named the NBL Rookie of the year

In 2011, he was named the NBL Rookie of the Year and helped the Saints win the championship. In 15 games for the Saints, he averaged 5.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He played for the Wellington Saints of the National Basketball League and went unpaid by the Saints to keep his college eligibility.

In 2014, the NBA announced that the  Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams had been chosen to the All-Rookie Second Team for the 2013-14 season.
